does pot inhibit REM sleep?

  1. I have recently been thinking about the brain and the sleep cycles, does anyone know if majajuana inhibits the rem stage of sleep? I really want non biased studies and no subjective answers or personal experiences!

    thanks!

  2. Well, all I can say is I think so. I have never slept so good in my life! All night long!
I'm on pain meds, so that's a big thing. I used to wake up 1-2 times a night for a pill. Not anymore ; )
I don't dream anymore tho.... Not that I can ever recall.

  3. Personal observation, most people seem to experience more vivid dreams during T-breaks/stopping use for varying time periods. So , it could lower the effects of REM sleep( I'm a little reluctant to say that it would fully stop REM sleep? Sorry if this isn't useful, just adding input , I've thought about this too.

  4. i know you wanted scientific studies and what not. thats some neurology shit. really dont know if anyone has done brain scans on it. although i would assume its been done already. Im sure theres somewhere on this site that has studies.

personal experience is yes, it inhibits it. you can physically only reach [deep] rem stages if youre sober. a brain thats being acted on by anything (drugs, alcohol, weed, anything) is still active in a sense. you hit rem because there is nothing occupying your brain. its not in any particular wave pattern and your pineal gland is free to do whatever it wants. weed is still working on your brain when you go to sleep so until the high wears off you wont hit [deep] rem. thats why weed helps you get to sleep but it wont actually help you sleep. sleep is interesting; if you dont get enough rem you will die. chances of that happening are slim though because you become insane/mentally ill first which usually warns other people to get help.
to the guy who doesnt dream anymore but is gettin good sleep. thats why; youre hitting just the tip of rem. enough to keep you sane/healthy if you have a good pattern/schedule of sleep. going on tbreaks your dreams will become intense as hell because your pineal gland is unloading all of those stages normally suppressed by meds/weed until it reaches an equilibrial sober point.
OP though; youre asking a very broad question i think. sero/norep/dopa all have to do with sleep. mainly serotonin. which im sure someone else could tie in to the whole weed/rem stuff a lot better than i can.

  5. kind of the wrong place to be looking for info. on this subject. do you really think anyone here is conducting studies, lol??? as a matter of fact, i doubt if anyone (besides you) has even wondered about the subject. don't mean to come off as rude, but i've worked in a research lab. this kind of research require thousands of hours of study, and hundreds of thousands of dollars to document correctly. you won't find what you're looking for here....

  6. All i know is that i wake up earlier after a night of blazin :smoke:

But i feel better rested as well :D

  7. haha i do this after drinking as well, weird?

idk, sometimes i smoke and get sleepy and cant sleep.
Sometimes i smoke and then sleep super hard.

idk its hit and miss i guess.

  8. I have "researched" this topic before, perhaps due to my paranoia of ruining my body/mind somehow. Apparently REM sleep is helpful for converting short term memory into long term, so it seems to be a "healthy" thing. It is also the stage of sleep (4) when we start dreaming, so if your recall is nil then most likely you have been prohibiting REM. Are you a chronic smoker? I am, and I smoke only at night so it has been effecting me. Take a few nights off, enjoy some lucid dreams and if you feel better you have probably answered your question.

  9. If I remember correctly, we have several periods or REM sleep during the course of a night of sleep. And the high from smoking wears out after two-three hours.

So, at least from mid to late in an average 7-8 hours night of sleep, the REM phases should not be affected much, if at all.

  10. So you came to a pot smokers forum to speak with medical doctors why? This would not be the place to find medical study answers. This would be the place to come for biased responses and personal experiences.

    Googled up this:

And from personal experience I do believe being under the influence as you are sleeping inhibits REM sleep, I try not to smoke within the hour of falling asleep, but thats just me, and im not saying you cant get incrdible sleep smoking two seconds before passing out, this is just what Ive noticed.

  12. I notice I don't recall my dreams when I go through a spell of smoking and have very vivid dreams when I'm not

  13. I've thought about this exact thing >>

  14. Mabey weed makes you get into a way deeper REM sleep because you don't remember your dreams sometimes and you don't wake up.
So mabey ur in a big ass REM sleep and ur brain is just dreaming like CRAZY but u dont remember it in the morn cause u were in a huge REM trance???
