does grinding weed make it lose potency?

No.
If you leave it to long it might lose a bit freshness but the potency is same.

 

the only way you can lose potency is by the trichs falling off as you grind it. Buy thats what a 4-piece grinder is for...

 

technically the trichomes are falling off & getting collected...
but i doubt it makes a noticeable difference.

 

No the potency won't be going anywhere just from grinding it up. But grinding up your bud and leaving it in a bag is just going to leave you with very dry weed, which will be harsher when smoking.

 

Unless we are talking about more than a couple of months, not really! (and somehow, I doubt it will last that long! ) Just keep it in a cool dark place!

It is concluded that carefully prepared herbal or resin cannabis or extracts are reasonably stable for 1 to 2 years if stored in the dark at room temperature.

It will lose flavor. That nice smell you notice when your grind it, is the terpinoids and other flavor molecules escaping. Ground up, there is more surface area and you lose more of the odor/flavor!

Grinding does not lose potency if:
1) you collect no kief
2) you make sure none is caught in the grinder
If you do not follow the above directions you will still most likely not notice a difference in potency between grinded and non grinded bud. Also remember, when your hands or anything touches bud, unseen molecules and small seen bits of plant matter will fall off of the nug and attach to the next surface they touch. For example:

inside of the bag, your fingers, floor, dollar bill

But as long as you try your best to get all the bud from the receiving point (dealer) to the delivering point (piece) with as little interaction with anything else you will lose least potency. And again, the act of grinding itself does not make weed lose potency, it will burn faster and more even so you may even get a better high since you are now consuming more plant matter in a shorter amount of time than it would to take the fire to burn completely through a solid nug.

The best way to maintain potency in a grind/chop is to use scissors and be very careful to hold every juicy sticky nugget between two designated fingers and delicately chop each nugget into a small surface area, I would say you want a consistency of 1/5th - 1/6th of a grain of rice. Chopping/Adding another 35% and under of Tobacco to the final chop will help everything heat evenly whether in a Bong or Joint. Coffee grinders are really fast, pretty much instant, but they really fluff out your weed and trichomes go flying everywhere ultimately making your weed not as strong/potent when you pack a bowl. I've always used scissors, I wish there was some magic grinder that kept the weed dense and automatically chopped for you at the same time xD that way I might save some goodness from not having to touch the budz as much
