I've never grown from seed before and have some different feminized seeds from a reputable seed company. Is it okay for me to grow one of the seeds for the express purpose of making a mother from it? I've heard an argument that when you take a seed, and grow it into a Mom, and take clones from that Mom, there's a higher risk of those clones to hermie while they're in flower as opposed to having just grown them straight from the seed. Any truth to this? Or Can I make Mom's from the seeds and take clones from those moms for a while? Thanks!
I have always used regular seeds and developed my own strain that is not prone to hermaphrodite. I also shy away from cloning off a clone off a clone off a clone . Some say that is silly and thats ok, I try to rule out as many prospective problems as possible. I don't have a problem with allot of old school growers philosophically.
Feminized seeds in general are more prone to Hermaphroditism then regular seeds. It comes as part of how they were made. Any unfertilized Cannabis female let run until near death will try and self fertilize as a last attempt at reproduction. I've cloned from clones from clones out to 8 generations and it was all the same plant. Lost it finally to my own bungling. BNW
Thanks for the response. I hope what I'm about to type makes any sense at all but I'll give it a try.... I now understand that Feminized seeds in general are more prone to Hermaphroditism then regular seeds. BUT, any thoughts on If I plant a seed, and make a Mom from it, and the Mom DOESN'T hermaphrodite, does that raise the probability that the cuts I take from that Mom WON'T hermie as well? As opposed to taking a chance on growing that same seed, vegging it, and flowering it? Thanks!
My opinion. i have used thousands of female seeds . I only had one strand that totally herm on me. ( shit gerentics dutch passion blue berry ) I always used fem seeds to cut clones from zero issues ever . If you use regs to be 100 percent sure i suggest vegging it then tossing it into 12/12 until you see female parts then vegging it again then cut all of your clones . Lot of wasted time there . Fem seeds plants it 99.99 percent of time its a female . Cut all of your clones from that seed
Odds are it'll be just fine growing from feminized. They really don't spit a hermaphrodite all that frequently. Now that I won't do. I've seen strains that never quite reverted to what I consider a full veg stage and lingered in a half flowered stage and grew slow. I have space outside and the time to just clone all the 2 foot tall seedlings then flower the adults and discard all the males both parents and male clones. Long way around but it is my preference. Same with taking clones on a flower stage plant. Way lower odds of a strike and you have that reversion factor again. BNW
Poor breeding is the cause of most hermaphrodites. It really has nothing to do with feminized seed. I've made thousands of feminized seeds and haven't had one herm on me or heard of any herming on anyone that grew them. Grow your plant and clone all you want.
I run a few strains that are prone to spitting out a few nanners late in flower. They are still hit and miss, and don’t always herm. Usually it’s a sign that they got a bit too much light and/ or heat in the last 10-14 days. These have been cloned repeatedly for years.
Some of the strains SG1 was running had an issue with this in a couple of lines. I don't recall the strain but a tiny bit of light sneaking in from a street light out front triggered the back side of one plant on the patio to fully seed out. That was the first then I found two more wearing lots of nanners elsewhere in the yard and ditched the rest of those two lines. To be fair to the Man he knew about it and had warned us to be vigilant and watch close. I think @3Deez ran some of his gear and can chime in on his experience if any. BNW
Organics Lounge Sometimes search does find what I need. Dark Goblin was the one. Page 33 in my Journal starts the SG1 gear run. Wow that was back in 2014. BNW
I remember SG's gear doing that. I was on the site then. But, just as a guest. I didn't actually join until 2017. I could never understand why anyone would breed with a strain that was so sensitive that it would hermaphrodite with a small light leak. Even if it was a kick ass strain. I know that SG was a top notch grower and put out some excellent strains. But, that wasn't one of them in my eyes. I personally wouldn't give seeds away from the hash strain I was breeding. I couldn't breed out the hermaphrodite traits. I burned all the seed stock in a fire pit so no one could keep it going.
I believe it was somewhere in 2012 when I found GC and began learning from the folks here. Prior to that I was more involved with marijuana activism in the northeast and Washington,DC.
Most blueberry strains I’ve grown were unstable. Blueberry Muffin and Blueberry Cupcake were terrible.
