Don't listen to all this black metal, industrial metal type shit. Listen to "core" and progressive metal. They have melodies, singing, screaming, breakdowns, heavy riffs, melodic solos, shredding solos, sweeping, good drums, good bass, etc. etc. The passion in this type of music is intense. I'm an atheist, but I listen to a lot of "christiancore", because christian metal musicians tend to have the most passion, and in turn, make great music. Examples of good metal: Vildhjarta - Traces Between the Buried and Me - COLORS Live DVD. <--Will change your mind. My dad now listens to them. Born of Osiris (new stuff) TesseracT - Openings, or Deception. Within the Ruins - Invade All sorts of good metal. I could introduce you to just about every different genre of good metal, minus industrial/black metal, etc. That shit sucks. It's all tremolo picking, blast beats, and generally, lyrics about how much they hate the world. I listen to all types of music, from dubstep, to reggae, to underground rap, to metal, to classical. (Yes, I was an accomplished violinist.) So my judgements aren't un-researched. (This is my anti-flame disclaimer)

Death metal is probably my least favorite of the genre, but I will listen to it. It doesn't all sound the same, you just have to look around and listen. I prefer stoner metal

I didn't like it much at first but it's grown on me...mostly because lots of my friends are in metal bands and it's really good live and loud...I can get down to some suicide silence or tony danza tap dance extravaganza
