Do i need to trim fan leaves?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by psp1313, Mar 21, 2021.

  1. Hello everyone. I am new to this and need some help. My girls have a lot of fan leaves and they are short and full. It’s been about 40 days from seed. I’ve fimmed the top once and some of the lower branches. I am worried that the lower sites are not getting the light they could use to branch out more. I am also worried it will affect the air circulation. The nodes are so close together. Should I trim some fan leaves? I’ve read argument to trim and arguments not to trim. My plan is to scrog 2 of these girls in a 2x4 tent. Also on a side note when I put my scrog to flower later on how tall on average do the colas get past the scrog net? A little worried about hiw far my light will be because i only have a 5 ft height on the tent. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

  2. Height limitations can be difficult to overcome at first. You need to learn how to grow them low. Have you heard of a training technique called manifolding? If you need them to grow low, you need to master this and a few other techniques.

Its really too soon to worry about defoliation. Defoliation can be used as another training technique to slow down stretch, if not stop it altogether. A defoliation at the end of veg and then again at the end of the 3rd week of flower would be the most beneficial.

  3. StickyBudHound thank you so much for your reply.

I looked into manifolding and it looks similar to what i am attempting now. I’ve already fimmed the top and some side branches. Was going to fim everything one more time to get 16 colas on top and more from the side branches I am trying to have catch up. Then I was going to put my scrog net down when she reaches 8”! I just felt like the nodes are so close together vs a lot of plants I see online where the foliage doesn’t looks as full and in the way. But if you say not to start till right before flower and after first three weeks I will wait. In your opinion does this plant look ok so far then? I just started germinating 6 more seeds and wanted to repeat what I’ve been doing to them if this first grow was looking like it was heading in the right direction.

  4. Good morning psp1313. It won't hurt anything to take a few leaves to open up the middle of the plant. See if you can also train the branches out from the middle to pull them apart and allow for better airflow through the plant.

Your plants are quite bushy. They seem to be doing alright. So far, so good! :)

  5. StickyBudHound Thank you . I tried to tie down some branches but I am having a hard time figuring how to do that and still lift the lid of the bucket to feed and monitor the water. I am going to try some new ideas this week. Thanks again for the help.
