Do HPS bulbs 'wear out'?

    My local grow store claims that HPS bulbs wear out after a year, and that even if they still light, the quality of the light becomes poor, and the plants won't grow as well as they would with a new bulb.

    I thought if it was still working, it was A.O.K.

    Who's right?

    read it somewhere so it must be right LOL,

    suppose it better to be safe than sorry, plus for optimal performance

    Thanks to all who replied. I was going to use my old bulb until it burned out, then switch to the new bulb. Now, I'll keep the old one as a backup and light with the new one.

    my hps has a 4 year warontey does this mean the bulb is good for 4 years i wouldn't think so i think it just means if something happens to the light i get my money back:)
