Denmark's Social Democrats move back into power | DW | 05.06.2019 I'm a big fan of the Danish social culture and have been for a long time. They're fiercely loyal, and have a no-nonsense attitude towards life, including politics. Subsume and milden The Social Democrats (a party name, they're all social democrats of some kind) just pulled off an election victory there, and they did so by doing something that I've been proselytizing for a long time. Best way to defeat an extreme viewpoint is to subsume and milden it. "Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen of the Liberal Party conceded defeat to the center-left party led by Mette Frederiksen, which appeared to have gained support thanks to its adoption of a tougher stance on immigration." "Frederiksen said she would seek support from right-wing parties on immigration, while reaching out to the left on issues such as welfare and climate change." Owning the far right The Danish far-right was crushed by this move. "The right-wing populist Danish People's Party won 8.8%, down from 21.1% in 2015." That's 21% during the height of the migrant crisis, when parties in power were towing the SJW line and were in complete denial of the negative consequences of mass migration, and DPP were the only ones speaking the uncomfortable truth. Now down to 8.8%, and Denmark is one of the countries toughest on migration and fiercest on integration. Cooperation I think this is a lesson both for the US left and right! Cooperation and compromise is preferable to polarization and ideological absolutism.
Holy shit! Who knew that compromise leads to extremists losing influence? Turns out all those "far right" loons aren't actually that far right if you don't demonize them for having some legitimate concerns about immigration. I see this in America as well with Trump. Obama solidly won two terms and then Trump won in 2016. He could not have done that without a sizable chunk of former Obama voters supporting him. When we make being a moderate very unappealing why are we surprised that people take more extreme positions?
If the Republicans should take a clue and adopt some of the better positions held by the Democrats. Since the Democrats have become a party of extremists the GOP could be the party of moderation but instead they're doing shit like pushing the anti abortion legislation at exactly the wrong time.
Yeah the anti abortion stuff is not a good idea, although to be fair Trump doesn't control the state legislatures
