I really don't want to get a card due to the price and the fact that it can be looked up. The question is can my regular doctor give me a prescription and then I just head over to dispensary with that prescription or do I have to go to a medical marijuana doctor to get one? I live in Sac California btw

  2. doctors dont give prescriptions for marijuana, every doctor is going to give you the same thing a recommendation...its a piece of paper that says your doctor recommends that you use marijuana for what ever reason.

and no it cant be looked up...

  3. Ok so here is the thing, I know that there are "special" doctors you can go to in order to get a recommendation. I know it's easier getting one from them but don't they charge a fee on top of what it would cost for obtaining a card? If I were able to get a recommendation from my reg doctor wouldn't that be the same as the special doctors recommendation minus the fees?

  4. I believe what you're referring to is the voluntary California State ID Card which is about $160 and you get it from your county. You do not have to have this card. Your written recommendation from your doctor is all you need.

  5. I was wondering about this too -- is the $160 a one time fee, or recurring? And what does the State ID card get you that a doctor's rec won't? In other words, why shell out the money?

  6. It is a yearly fee, you pay it every year.

The reason why you would want it is that it is the ONLY form of ID that ALL cops in California have to accept and leave you alone. If you are traveling with more than an ounce EVER, it's a good idea to have it.

  7. Thanks for the answers guys, the main thing is money right now, I really can't afford to spend 70-100 on evaulations. If I go to a speical doctor do they still charge for a recommendation? What are my chances that my Kaiser doctor gives me a recomemendation? I would like to not have to spend any money other than buying it from the dispensary

  8. good luck trying to get your Kaiser doctor to reccomend one. My friend got her doctor to reccomend her.(but she's not Kaiser, I heard they wont.) You should do like everybody else and go to a MMJ doctor who will charge you for the reccomendation. They charge differing amounts, the less they charge the less their reputation for being a good reliable doctor. Everyone has to go through these steps.

  9. I hate the misinformation about getting your medical card. Getting one is SAFER than smoking without one for two reasons: 1. If you smoke without one and get in trouble with the police because of it, it's gonna look bad and most likely people doing a background check on you for a job or whatever will be able to look it up (maybe not in California but in most states it's a criminal record). And 2, nobody can look up that you have the card! Doctor patient confidentiality, there's no way for anyone to know except you.

  10. To the OP: The only way you're going to be considered a legal patient is if you fork over at least $100 (that's the minimum rate I've seen for a first rec) to a "green doctor".

Also, cheaper isn't better. I know quite a few people who got busted with weed and the police did not accept their reccomendation as legal because it was through some shady place that didn't do their paperwork correctly.

MediCann is a good company, there are a few others as well that you can go through. I'd rather go with a place that has the means to protect me as a patient... even if it means more money.

You will not be able to find a regular ol' doctor that will give you a rec. The doctors who give out the recs have it set up that you go in there for a visit - bring all your paperwork from other doctors.. and talk to them. Then you pay the fee.. and they give you your rec if they determine that it would be of benefit to you.

  11. I don't know anyone who got busted with weed and had a recommendation, but...

I don't believe that any cop in CA has any obligation to accept any recommendation, regardless of how legitimate it appears. A recommendation simply provides you with an "affirmative defense", meaning that if you do get busted you can use the recommendation to defend yourself against the charge (and possibly get your meds back). A cop may use his or her discretion and not bust you if you have a recommendation, but they are in no position to evaluate the legitimacy of a recommendation.

The state ID card is different. If you obtain a state ID card then the cops must accept this (unless they suspect it is fraudulent) and cannot arrest you.

    See CA SB420

  12. Basically a recommendation is from your doc, there's a series
of papers with your info on it, your docs, and your reason for
being recommended mmj. You can use it to get into clinics.

The "card" (here in CO it's not a card) is the legit paper that has
your info on it and says you're a legal medical patient. CO is red
and looks like an oversized check with your info and approval from
the state like this. I just got mine a couple days ago.
