Did I make tincture correctly?

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by Turmoilx2, Apr 17, 2016.

  1. So basically I was wondering if I should have hope for good results if I followed these steps to make tincture:
    1. I decarboxylated 14g of purple kush buds grinded up at 240 for 30 mins.
    2. I poured the decarbed weed into a mason jar.
    3. I poured 1/2 cups 94% alcohol into the jar. Closed the lid. Shook.
    4. I will be waiting almost a month shaking frequently everyday.
Should I get good results? Should I keep it in the freezer or is room temperature fine? I know it should be in a dark place to avoid the loss of THC.

    Thanks & happy tokin'

  2. You can have a good tincture with what you've done. If you've already mixed the material with the alcohol and really want to wait a month, then put it in the freezer. The freezer inhibits chlorophyll extractions but doesn't stop it so it's going to taste pretty green after a month.

I would have recommended 40 minutes for the decarb but you're close enough. What hasn't fully decarbed will do so naturally within a couple of months anyway. When you strain your material you will still need to evaporate off some of the alcohol in order to concentrate it. Reduce it to about 6 fluid ounces or less. If you aren't satisfied with half a dropper, reduce it another ounce. That's how you make a strong Green Dragon tincture.

    Good luck. :)

  3. Thanks for the info. Learned a few things :) I have a couple more questions if you dont mind. Is there a preferable method to use to reduce the alcohol? If my initial menstruum input was 8 ounces will i get 8 ounces out with thorough straining or will i lose some somehow? @PsychedelicSam

  4. Reducing the alcohol is very easy. You can just let it naturally evaporate in a dark cupboard but that can take a couple of days. Most people use a double boiler type setup or a hot water bath. Alcohol boils off at 173°F which is easy to achieve and you just let it bubble until it reaches the level you want.

If you used 8oz of alcohol for 14g, you're going to lose about an ounce and a half of liquid to absorption of material and your filter. The dry material will absorb about an ounce. If it were me and I was going to let it sit for a month, I'd add another 2 ounces of alcohol to the jar so that you'll have enough for a good extraction and you'll evaporate that off at the end, anyway. Also, after you've strained your material you should rinse it with enough fresh alcohol to flush out most of what's left. There's about 20% left behind from the first. You then add that to the first one and evaporate it off until you have a total of 6oz or less. :)
