Diabetes And Marijuana

Discussion in 'Experienced Cannabis Enthusiasts' started by Typewritermonky, Mar 16, 2010.

  1. I have a friend who is 19 and was just diagnosed with diabetes that came out of nowhere. Really healthy, active guy who is incredibly nice. He's really not feeling good (mentally and emotionally) about being diagnosed with diabetes his senior year. And since it means no more alcohol and whatnot, he was wondering if it was O.K to smoke weed if he is diabetic or if it would put him at a serious health risk considering marijuana is one of his (like ours) enjoyments in life.

I didn't really know where to put this, but answers from people who know are great, answers from anyone who is diabetic would be a godsend.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. no alcohol? why?

i have a diabetic friend, drinks and smokes the herb. not a lot, but he does both on occasion.

he doesnt seem to have any problems?

im not sure, but my friend doesn't seem to have any issues. i don't know what type he is though

  3. Drinking alcohol is really bad for him because it could potentially raise his blood sugar WAY to high and if he's drunk he's probably not about to put his insulin shots in.

    Think vaping would be good?

  4. well obviously vaping would be better than smoking but for both i think its the same. i think the only real worry one would have is to make sure you enter the right amount of insulin per carb because my friend eats a shit load. i hang around him a lot so i know the numbers for a lot of foods but its no big deal i help him out. but yeah vaping is always better. it might depend on what kinda diabetes, idk. i think my buddy has type 1 diabetes if it changes anything. and hes had diabetes since 2nd grade, your buddy will get used to it. it is a definite change, but it could always be worse, so it should be celebrated that it is not :)

  5. nah its fine to smoke weed if you're diabetic. a couple smokin buddies of mine are diabetic.

  6. Thanks.

  7. Smoking weed shouldn't cause an influx in blood glucose. It's going to be the high carb munchies afterward.

  8. Type 1? Type 2? Type 3?

  9. i am a type I diabetic, have been since i was 11 (i am 19).

i smoke everyday, with no adverse effects on my sugar levels. the smoking itself does nothing, the getting high and forgetting to take a dose of insulin or not taking enough will of course effect the numbers.

and you are right about alcohol. it is converted from ethanol to glucose in your liver, raising your sugar levels. it is hard to determine how much insulin to take when you drink, and that is why i usually stick to pot.

tell your friend, though that if he takes shots of UNFLAVORED liquor, that each shot is relatively carb-less. if he takes 10 shots, he should take enough insulin for about 15-20 carbs.

for beer, though its a little different. depends on the beer, whats is made form, etc. a six pack of lager will set me back about 40-50 carbs worth of insulin.

  10. soo thats like 3 quarters of a bagel, no big deal :smoking:
