Designing Grow Box - New Grower

Discussion in 'Do It Yourself' started by JohnnyCat, Oct 8, 2014.

  1. Hi everyone,

Been reading this forum up and down and collecting tons of useful information. Little background - kind of guy that researches ad nauseam, if I'm going to do something it needs to be done right. Goal is to grow for personal use between the wife and I, which equates to 1.5-2 oz a month. (Not saying I want to harvest that much every month, just would like that to be my minimum annual average.). Not too concerned about a budget - which makes me wonder if I should just go with the small BC box - but if I can build an equivalent/better product at 20% cost, you have my attention.

Decided where this cabinet will go, but still have a choice on size. If possible, prefer to keep the size to 24" X 30" X 42", however I can extend the depth and height, if needed, to reach a maximum size of 36" X 30" X 60".

I want to do a hydro grow, using HPS lighting, carbon filter. Stealth is important. It will be located in a locked, upstairs room with a window, in my house, but do not want to take any chances with smell.

Any comments on the size of the cabinet, given my yield requirements? Does it make sense to use any available extra space to build a second chamber? I don't need to be in a constant harvesting cycle -- at least that's how I feel at this moment :).

TIA for helping me finish the spec for this cabinet.

  2. You want as much height as you can get.

Hydro eats up ~ 15" +  the grow pot + the plant + room above the plant for the light and any exhaust fans

If you go max l & w, as well, you can grow a single plant that will yield ~ 4+ ozs, assuming you have your light dialed in

See my thred in hydro as well as my Insight thread (link in my sig). I currently have a SS 260 in a 3 x 3

  3. Thanks! I will go with the max size for the cabinet. I see you are using LED, was planning on HPS. I guess if I only have enough room for one plant a 150w HPS will do.
