Is anyone else on here a deist? Being a deist means that you believe in god but you do not believe in organized religion? I personally believe that religion was invented to make people live by "desirable" virtues and to gain money over the the centuries. Being a deist means that you believe that god does not inter-vein with human problems but he indeed created us.
I was a deitist, but not any more. I discovered Wicca and since then my life has been getting better at every spot.
I was a solid atheist most my life, but have been a deist the last few years due to personal spiritual experiences. However I remain somewhat agnostic until we find out more about the subconcious.
i'm also a deist. i even started a thread like this. lol i, much like you, believe that organized religion was created to set up society's moral standings and to control them with the fear of eternal punishment. i believe the universe is so complicated that a being of higher intelligience, power, whatever you want to call it must have created it. i don't know what happens after death. but i certainly don't believe that if you are not christian you will go to hell. I think a higher power would have the sense to not punish good people who are non believers. If an athiest man does good all his life and simply doesn't believe in god why should he go to hell for that? one of the main problems i have with christianity. i choose to believe a higher power did indeed create us. however he lets the universe run on its own.
I consider myself a deist after being a "born again" christian for decades. I also believe that organized religion is generally a bad thing. I am also a physician and my background in biology keeps me from being able to believe that life arose from non life. There is simply too much that has to be in place for even the simplest life form possible to have happened "spontaneously". I felt the conflict between christianity and science as well though and finally in the past few years let go of that guilt ridden, judgemental arrogant religion for good. Thomas Paines book was like a light switching on in my brain. For right now, deism makes sense to me. I continue to search though.
i find myself between atheism and deism, not awkwardly straddling the two but comfortably embracing them both.
could you define the two terms? As i understand it they are mutually exclusive. Deism is a form of theism and atheism is nontheistic. Just curious how you define/understand the terms and how you justify your claimed position? Never heard anyone claim to be both. Maybe i misunderstood though?

no you have understood correctly. it's not really going to be an easy concept for me to convey as you are right, they are mutually exclusive. i won't define them because i am referring to them by their strictly functional definitions. i know this sounds odd, contradictory, and, logically speaking, not necessarily possible. i'm not really sure how i could explain it but things simply don't make sense to me unless i define the existence of a god as being both true and untrue. the fact is that's the way i see it. further explanation on my part would be rambling on concepts which i cannot prove, or logically construe. huh? i don't understand this post.
777 said to be Gods number and 666 being the devils. Your post was your 777 so i was just noticing that. Well thanks for the previous part of your post!
