Deformity? & Yellowing question...

Discussion in 'Sick Plants and Problems' started by 2Supra4U, Dec 13, 2006.

  1. Hi all,

I recently started my first grow in my closet and have a few quick questions...

I currently have 4 Skunk#1 seedlings (down from 5 as one sprouted but didnt breakout from its shell after forever so i got rid of it)

2 of the are about a week and 3 days old, the other 2 are just about one week old.

The 2 older are growing great (as far as my opinion goes) and one of the younger ones is almost caught up in size & progress to the two older ones...but there is one that is just not like the other as you will see

First, I noticed that on one the older plants, one of the initial sprout leaves is turning a bright yellow. I was just wondering when it is normal for these leaves to die off?? I was thinking not for at least a few weeks, but someone please correct me if i'm wrong and if this is normal after about a week and a half.

Sorry for the shit pics (blurry), i don't have a digi so I borrowed my roomates...

The first pic is of one of the older ones with the yellowing leaf...

The second is of the other older plant (farthest progressed)

Third is of one of the younger ones but the healthy looking one...

The fourth is of the what i think is the deformed seedling (deformed looking tiny leaves growing, just looks weird)...

anyone have any idea opinion about these two things? any reason why this one seedling is all wacked out and deformed like this?

  2. heres 2 more pics with my thumb comparing the 2 younger seedlings and there size difference....

Thanks to all that give some input...

  3. The cotyledons will yellow when the seedling has exhuasted its supply of food(which is what those leaves are), what is in your soil? It may be time for a very light feed. A week and a hlaf is a bit premature, mine normally de off around week 3 but different soil compostions may affect when this occurs.

  4. Has nothing to do with exhausting the food from the see, i have had them on my plant fully green with 7 full sets of leafs above it.

And NO! its not time to feed that seedling anything yet for another 3-4 weeks, if you already have thats your problem.

Also, what soil are you using?

  5. The soil i'm using is a custom blend (not store bought). I got it from my buddy, whos friends back in his hometown own and operate a hydroponics store (and also breed, grow and have the crazzzy crazzzy organic greeeen). I don't know the exact composition of the soil, I just know that its was mixed specifically for dopesmoke....so I'm pretty sure there is no added nutes or any of that bullshit (these guys r like hippie scientists its nuts). I have not fed these plants anything so far (i'm not that stupid, i may not have grown before, but i know what im doing). Also, it's only the one older plant that is doing this, other 3 show no sign of yellowing (even the fucked up one). Is there any possibility that it could be a watering problem?? I know I haven't over watered. Last time I watered was a day and a half ago i think. I usually just give the plat a lil bit of water everyday (LITTLE BIT, no i dont pour a whole glass into it everyday so dont tell me im overwatering) but mostly I usually do it every 2 days or so. The pic below is the cup i fill up to water the plants, I usually give the plants 3/4 of this cup when the soil is dry....but if im giving some everydayish, i usually fill up this cup less then a 1/4 (maybe just about a 1/4 of this glass) and give the plants that. Its not much, its a tiny cup too...

I was thinking also maybe it was related to the lights and maybe the first sign of light burn on the plant ( I'm using cfls, and i keep the light about and inch or 2 away from the lights.....again no other plants show this problem so i've figured it wasnt the lights....plus today when i got up I took a look at them, and now the other leaf on that plant is turning yellow too....pic is there........ideas?

anyone have any watering guidelines as far as how much a seedling should get every time its watered (IE. 100ml, 200ml, etc....) cuz i'd rather have a number to go by rather then givin them a bit here and there...

any opinion on the fucked up plant?

sorry for the shit pics again

  6. Water more. a little every day is how i do it as well, dont believe in that flood the pot and wait a couple days crap. but 1/4 of that cup seems like too little to me, it does evaporate quickly.

the main leafs look ok to me on that last picture. Ask your buddies what the soil makeup is, if its made specifically for growing weed, it may have nutrients in it and only intended for use when the seedling is well established and ready for transplanting...

I too do my own super-d-duper hippy soil mix, but i dont use that until the plant is very well established, until then it sits in TH-1 (non nuted soil)

my oppinion on the fucked plant is burn from the soil. Just because the others are doing ok for now doenst mean its not that, some plants are stronger than others, but the fact that your first peddles are already yellow is a sign something is wrong.

So try watering a little more see if that helps. But still ask about the soil.

  7. Yea the main leaves look great....the new set comin up has doubled since last night as well....the other 2 goods one looks great too, new growth everyday...

I wouldnt disagree with you about the fucked one....cuz I dont know any better :) ..... but I just find it odd b/c the other one that is the same age and has been thre same conditions as the fucked one, is almost as big as the oldest 2 in terms of size and progress. The older two were transplanted into this soil and the two younger were put in this soil when their taproots where out from the seed (they been in the soil since the beginning of their life). I know there are explanations for it, but why then would one be tiny and crippled (if pics were clear u'd clearly see it is werid looking) and the other is on crack and strong and healthy looking??

If there are x-tra nutes in the soil (im pretty sure theres not), why would it only affect the one and not the rest(negatively)? I know for example if i take steroids, a tiny bit might not do me good or hurt me but it might do you very well (just because of the chemistry of the different bodies, and this totally applies to certain things and substances, etc.)

Also, I the other reason I doubt there is anything in the soil is b/c I was given this soil specifically for my seedlings to grow in....considering where its comin from, why would they give me shit that just gonna hurt the plants? so thats just another reason why I don't believe the soil is no good. (I could always be wrong)

  8. yea tru, some r obviously stronger then other so for all i know the other 3 will turn yellow tomorrow.....lol

i gave the bitches (bitches hopefully) some more water just now, and i'll prolly give a some more tonight late and then see tomorrow how its lookin

but if the others stay healthy and this yellowone gets worse im gonna be stumped.

  9. me personally i learned from my error, allways use fresh soil from a bag you opened, i reused my pepper plants soil on my first grow.

and contracted spider mites. i believe they were in the soil as larve.

luckily i got rid of all of them , but the little fawkers, did teach me a lesson.

next time id suggest using fox farm. [ you cant beat the stuff ] . you can almost say the stuff was made to grow weed in.

    good luck:smoking:

  10. Yesterday I gave the plants some water and then late last night I gave them some more. I just got up like 10min ago and just checked on them. The yellowing has begun turning brown on one of the leaves. The top of the plant still looks great, as far as I can see. The others are fine too, even the fucked up mutant has grown in size. The other younger plant has now made it to the level of the older two (maybe even be bigger now, depite being 3 or 4 days younger).

The other plants show no sign of yellowing, even after days.

Are there any other explanations why these leaves might turn yellow and the rest of the plant not? I'll still give them all time to show if the one will get any worse and if any of the others will get the same problem.

The 3 good plants are lookin great, the bad thing is I'm goin home in a day or two for Xmas, etc. So, i'm not gonna be around for like 2 weeks. My roomate is gonna water for me up until he leaves so they shouldnt die on me.

I have a feeling when I come back from home i'm gonna be starting a new grow....:(

I'm gonna design a new lighting setup for my Cfl's over my break, and hopefully build the frame and wire it up when I get back...

  11. obviously then it was because of underwatering, which is why i first said water more.

PS yellowing leafs do not come back green, they continue to die off so the 2 small leafs that was yellow will naturally turn brown.

  12. K.....maybe i was a lil extreme when I said how little I give. I'm pretty damn sure its not due to underwatering. I wouldn't bother to post if I didnt think it was something more serious then a beginners mistake. either way, its out of my hands right now as i have left and am now back home. I did a final checkup on them b4 i left today and plant with the yellowing looks ok, but u can see its noticable its not the same as my other 2 plants (dosent look as healthy)(excluding the mutated plant as well). but my one younger plant has grown crazy over night, its now quite bigger then the two older ones which im suprised about. my roomies gonna do watering for me while im gone so hopefully when i get back they are still alive and he didnt forget about them hahaa.

wolf: i knew about the yellowing leaves, but thx for ur help

just gonna have to wait it out now and hopefully in 2 weeks when i get back i'll still be in business and can move onto the next problem i come accross haha.
