"Decriminalization/Legalization: Closer than we Think?"

Discussion in 'Experienced Cannabis Enthusiasts' started by needforweed420, Nov 7, 2007.

  1. Idk if its just me, but it seems that we are getting closer than ever to decriminalization/legalization.

we had Denver, Colorado pass some state laws that help our cause
then we had Oregon looking into it.
Ohio is pretty lenient and is getting better.
And now MA is passing some.

On top of all of this it seems as if quite a few politicians running in the '08 election have some good things to say about the herb.

idk if its just me, but im getting the inclination that marijuana is going to be decriminalized/legalized within the next 5 or so years.

    What do you all think?

  2. I dont think this can happen until the old people that run this country die. Sorry if that sounds mean, but its true. When our generation is actually running the country, thats when you will see actual change. But for now, we still have these "reefer madness pioneers" running all over the place. I give them maybe 10-15 years more. In 25 years i would say it will be legal like booze.

  3. that idea was my second notion. i think there are a ot of stiffs in there now but idk, i still get the feeling that since all these states are changing, the people in there now will see that it is not as bad as they make it out to be and will promote change.

idk. maybe im just hoping for the best

  4. i agree that people are becoming progressive thinkers as they are educated more on the subject. What im saying is, it doesnt matter what the people think or want. Fact of the matter is the federal government led by a bunch of old stubborn rich republicans will never change their stripes. Tomorrow it could be announced that weed cures cancer and they would still say "but its reefer, omg omg immoral!!!!11"

  5. EXACTLY! haha, it does sound mean but shits gonna be tough until they croak.

but who knows? maybe they'll wise up.

  6. well, when you're dealing with 75 year olds that are stubborn and brainwashed, what can you do? Anything short of god coming down and telling these people its ok will do nothing.

  7. Ohio pretty much owns in the decriminilization part. 100g is no jail time, nothing on your record, and only 100 dollar fine.

200g is 30 days and 250 fine. I love my state!

  8. someone needs to get God here now

  9. philly is pretty much the same way unless you get unlucky. The reason for this is not because they are suddenly realizing that weed isnt so bad, its simply because they have bigger fish to fry. I dont know about ohio, but here we have a rampant gang/heroin/meth problem. Busting pot heads just isnt kosher anymore. I did just hear however that one of my old connects who goes to drxel just got busted with 7 pounds in his dorm, he is facing a minimum of 4 years, shame.

  10. Yeah, I mean most of the time, cops are just like, well I can't do shit about it so if they catch you driving and smoking, or find it in your car, they just pour it on the ground and say bye bye.

  11. it already has been proven that THC helps reduce cancer cells in half. So that and among many other ailments marijuana aids still has no effect on its legality. It is the stigma that is applied that allows it to stay in the law books the reefer madness comments made back in 1937 are what the government is listening to still. THey are enforcing a law of yesteryear in the government of today. IT is shitty but things will eventually change.

  12. i dont have alot of knowledge on this topic, but maybe someone can answer this for me. Alchahol prohibition back in the early 1900's or whenever. How long did it last (illegality) and what finally made them overturn the laws? Maybe if we looked back in the past, we can have a better idea of how to legalize in the future. Some event had to occur for the tides to change, or am i way of base here?

  13. How long exactly I do not know.

But basically, to end it they just did not follow the law, hence Moonshiners.

They would sneak alcohol around under the light of the moon, so at night.

  14. hmm, i guess they eventually got tired of fighting it? To me weed is way easier to smuggle then moonshine, its amazing that they are still fighting this.

  15. It is amazing, but ever since Nixon and his war on drugs, it has been like this. Yes we all know that marijuana is not horrible for you. And everyone does question how it can still be illegal when alcohol and cigarettes are not.

Just realize it will change with in time.

  16. agreed

  17. 13 years, from 1920-1933.

  18. They would DEFINATLY have god arrested if he pulled a stunt like that.

  19. Great idea!!
As DavidH said prohibition was in place from 1920 to 1933.

I've found several references to a group of lawyers called the "Voluntary Committee of Lawyers" which was pivotal in bringing about the repeal of the prohibition. But before the VCL could take leadership in the fight it first required the establishment of popular support for repeal, as the VCL said "when the weight of public opinion demanded repeal of Prohibition, Prohibition would be repealed".

Here's an article about what ended alcohol prohibition: http://www.druglibrary.org/schaffer/alcohol/vcl1.htm

  20. The whole thing is, alcohol was extremely popular and it was just taken away from them suddenly. It also ONLY took 13 years for the laws to be changed back, which is not a long time at all.

Now I'm not saying that Marijuana is not popular, but it was not just TAKEN from us as alcohol was.
