Decarb oven heat fluctuation

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by domerdu, Aug 2, 2022.

  1. All, the question I ask is this: My oven temperature fluctuates 5 to 10 degrees + or - at 250 degree setting. This it is a continued cycle through out the intended 30 minute decarb time. Should I be concerned with this deviation or WTF let it roll?

  2. Most standard home ovens fluctuate somewhere in that range. When I decarb, I do 240 setting for 60 min. My oils/edibles come out great. Everyone does it a little different. [IMG]

  3. Great info above, I found in R&D that 245°F for 45 minutes was the best time for getting the vast majority of the THCA to Delta-9 THC.

Keep in mind that my results were based on using a pyrex dish and caterwrapping with Aluminum foil (a method of wrapping that starts with you pulling out a long sheet of foil, placing the container on top with a long enough piece on the left to pull over the top of the container and underneath it. Then you tear off enough from the roll to cover it over the top one more time. Pressing down on the rim of the pyrex to get a good seal (as well as compressing the sides to that they are snug to the container.

With the above in mind, it makes sense why the temp for mine is slightly higher as well as the time to decarb. Doing this we found that we not only had a great decarb, but maintained a significant amount of terpenes vs the uncovered method.

Play around with different methods until you find what you prefer :)

If you do this extra 15 minutes over what you are currently doing, you should be fine. As long as you don't go super long, you won't risk converting a lot of the THC to CBN (which will make your edibles super sleepy) and you'll make sure that you've converted the vast majority of your THCA.

All I ask is that if you have done an uncovered decarb in the past, try the caterwrap method (with the time/temp I posted) and see if you notice a difference. Once I did it this way, I never went back to uncovered (because I realized that the smell in my house was effect that was no longer going to be in my infusion).

Also! Very important, if you are going to do a caterwrapped decarb, definitely do a caterwrapped infusion as well (I usually do 245°F for 1 hour for flower and 45 minutes at the same temp for Rosin).

If you have an uncovered infusion, there's no real point to doing a covered decarb (though you probably would maintain a bit more terpenes).

My preferred infusion medium is Unrefined Coconut Oil (if you have a Costco membership you can get a big Kirkland brand tub for cheap) and Liquid Sunflower Lecithin (I often use the NOW brand on Amazon). I usually do about 85% Coconut to 15% Lecithin, but BNW's 20% Lecithin is probably ideal.

If you do what I describe above, I very much doubt you will have any complaints once you experience the fruits of your labor.

  4. That makes sense. I failed to mention that I decarb in a sealed mason jar (I infuse in a sealed jar as well), which in theory would be similar to caterwrap method I suppose. Love the costco coconut oil, can't beat it. Peace.

  5. Get an inexpensive oven thermometer. :)

  6. It doesn't make a lick of difference. It'll average out and all ovens have some wiggle room between it's highest and lowest triggers on the controllers. Use an Oven thermometer as they can be 10-20 or more Degrees F off from what the dial is set at. Close enough IS good enough. Error on the hotter / Longer side is far better then not hot enough or to short.
