Just found this thread, really big death metal fan here. I love all sorts from the classics to ugly raw underground shit to mainstream melodeath/even deathcore. When I'm sober I like to listen to the more brutal stuff, I'm quite hyperactive and energetic and I love really complex, over the top stuff like Internal Suffering, Devourment, Dripping, Purulent, Cannibal Corpse etc. When I'm high, I'll listen to something a bit more deep and subtle, the kind of stuff I don't normally have the patience for. What have people been listening to lately then? Any new releases you're looking forward to? I'm at Wacken this year and will be certainly seeing Morbid Angel (even if the last album sucked), Morgoth and maybe Hail of Bullets.
My three favourite death metal records Cryptopsy - None So Vile Enmity - Illuminations of Vile Engorgement Carnivorous Vagina - Istinto Omicida Cryptopsy's is a classic I'd recommend to anyone with a remote interest in metal. Riffing is INCREDIBLE, songs flow perfectly, vocals are inhuman, lyrics are poetic and nasty and the musicianship is stellar. One of my favourite albums ever. Enmity's is a very weird one. Lots of people write it off as childish noise, but everyone agrees that it's quite possibly the most brutal album ever released. For me, I think there's something so forward-thinking and unique about their composition style. The riffs are weird as hell arrangements of atonal churns and chugs, guitars eschew all melody and basically play morse code riffs in a way no one else has attempted. I'd totally understand people not liking this, but for me I find it fascinating and even moreso when I'm high. Carnivorous Vagina you're totally allowed to hate. They're basically a Mortician worship band from Italy but I actually like them better than Mortician (Will Rahmer produced their album). The guitar tone is massive and all-encompassing, the drum machine (yeah I know but it suits their cold, unwelcoming music) and the vocals are horrifying. It's goofy and lowbrow tho and I wouldn't expect a lot of people to like it, I just think it's really fun and heavy and the Italian horror movie samples are a nice added touch.
