Dead car battery from the cold

  1. Been doing some small time research.

Long story short I didn't go out for a couple days because to be quite honest I just didn't need to.

Turns out the battery on my car is dead after not starting it for about 4-5 days.

I can't fucking stand cars whatsoever.

Is the battery pretty much unrecoverable and I'm forced to buy a new one?

  2. Short answer...possibly

Car batteries can be recharged (all the while the motor is running, the battery is charging itself), you just need to find someone with a charger, they plug into a wall socket, with two jacks (one red, one black) to connect to the metal connections on the battery.

HOWEVER, depending on the age of the battery, then it could need changing. This will be necessary if you recharge the battery, and it dies again. But i'd only do this after having tried to recharge it, its a lot less expensive.

I won't be able/shouldn't try to get my fathers car to try and jump mine?

Went out there to try it, deck lights came on, alarm light came on, but no turning over whatsoever.

  4. Yes, its effectively the same thing.

You'd need jumper cables though, and not everyone has a pair. However, the thing with jumping a car is that you need to keep it running for a fair while, to get it to recharge to an acceptable level; and petrol costs a lot. If you do it like that, wait til you need to make a drive of decent length otherwise you could get to the place you're going but then have another flat battery.

Whereas with a battery charger, its just charging off the household electric.

Your call, dude. Hope it helped :)

  5. if or when you get it started take it to an auto parts store and have them test the system. most will do it for free and tell you if you need a new battery or any other part of the charging system. ;)
