Dark before harvest?

Discussion in 'Harvesting and Processing Marijuana' started by Guest, Dec 31, 2012.

  1. So my question is, is it necessary to have a dark period before harvest if so why?

  2. You should have 8 hr dark period then chop your plant before light hits it. THC is at its highest point after 8 hrs of no light :)

  3. Sorry bout the poor picture quality... My plants are 8 weeks and 2 days into flower the trichs are about 90% cloudy

  4. Lookin good... I'm in the process of building my new grow room. I should have it going in a few weeks I can't wait!

  5. That's awesome! I scored a 4x8x6 tent for free so I got that going good gonna be upgrading to a 1000w hps too. Not going to lst this new grow cuz I want fat colas not a bunch of small nugs like this grow, dont get me wrong this was my best grow so far. Super sticky and dank smelling

  6. After I get my new room set up I will start my sixth grow. My bud seems to improve every grow. Keep experimenting with techniques until you get what your looking for. I double my harvest every grow!

  7. Idk the final weight yet but its easily 4 times my first weight! Yeah I've come to realize its all trial and error. Best of luck to you!

  8. What? then it goes back down somehow. Its not like you are flash freezing it right then. Then what, you dry it in a dark room. Just sayin, I dont know, but then again I dont think you do either. I have harvested at dark in the light, after days of darkness, with a bunch of different strains over the years and it never has made a difference one way or the other. I even tried it with identical clones both ways.

  9. A live plant will be at its peak THC point after being in the dark. You need to read up a bit more if you don't think it makes a difference. Every grow book I have read or any grower I have talked to said the same thing. If you want extra sticky icky buds at harvest when your plants have been in 8 hours of darkness. After the initial chop it doesn't matter if there in the light when you trim.

  10. Never read a whole book and dont recall hearing that in any book. I do have 27-28 years experience so at least know I'm not a noob, and with as much reading as I do everyday I certainly dont need to read up a bit more. Hell I was reading High Times back when they had coke and acid in the mag. I have heard of the technique on this forum and it seems up to debate for the most part. I have tried it three times and could not see, taste, or notice a difference in buzz. Just my observations anyway.

  11. My local dispensary will test bud you bring in if your trying to sell it to them. My next harvest I'm going to get some more proof for you. Seriously though you should harvest after 8 hours of dark. Its your loss if ya don't!

  12. Ok I appreciate the effort but I HAVE tried it and compared with clones and could not tell a difference. But I am willing to have a look. I guess technically I have not picked after 8 hrs. I went three days once and tried just picking after 12 hrs just before the lights came on. 8 would mean picking at 4 in the morning, or do you just kill the lights whenever and wait 8? Fortunately I have no major illness so dont have a card, hence the privillage of the dispensary. I just use it relationally and its not legal here in MI to use that way.

  13. On my indoor harvest I just cut the light for 8 hours then harvested. On my outdoor I was out there 4:30a.m. I overslept a little lol! I have always harvested after 8 hours of dark never in the light, so I'm curious to run my test on my next.

  14. Always harvest at the beginning of the day cycle. The terpenes produced in the dark cycle are responsible for scent and taste. As the day progresses the terpenes produced during the dark period start to degrade and the taste and smell of the flowers degrade in light much more than the dark period.

Extended dark periods will not produce more thricomes as many growers seem to think, but harvesting at the start of the daylight period will produce better tasting harvests because of the higher concentration of terpenes.

To think that 2-3 days of darkness increases trichome production after 8-10 weeks flowering is nothing more than anecdotal evidence. Nothing you do in the last few days of growing is going to increase trichomes any more than allowing the flowers to ripen normally.

  15. Here we go again. There are at least 5 or more theories out there on why it works, if it works, bla bla bla. Its tough to know who knows what and everything else. The are so many opinions on the matter and tons of discussion on it in every forum. I tested it myself because I can believe what I see personally. It never made a difference to me. I tend to believe you first paragraph but still did not notice it. I've heard 4 hrs, 24 hrs, 36 hrs, even four days(in which the dudes main cola molded), and now 8 hrs. I say pick it and forget it. What I grow and smoke is right up there with the best weed I smoke, and I know 4 or 5 growers personally and smoke with them regularly, and have been to Amsterdam 4 times and smoked the best available, and I usually pick about mid day.

  16. Its like saying wait till the stem snaps before curing. Hogwash.
