Damping Fan Sound?

  1. Hi All,

I have a 10" Centrifugal fan that will be venting my 600W artic sun hood. The problem is I just discovered after plugging in the fan for the first time how powerful and loud the fan is. It will be mounted inside of my box which is made of 7/16" plywood. Im curious if anyone has any suggestions as how to dampen the sound. Fortunately the fan is in a location where I can pack things in around it and its not exposed to the light so packing foam or something else around it is an option if that would help.

  2. Hang it with bungees is an easy fix. Or put foam around the edges wherever you mount it.

    Hope this helps.

  3. 10" fan for a 600 watt? Sounds pretty big. You could get a $20 fan speed controller to dial down the cfm's which makes a big difference in fan noise.

  4. Thanks guys, I had seen that muffler though I wasnt exactly excited to pay 90 bucks for something like that when i feel like I could whip something up with 20 bucks at home depot.

johnk- Im tending to agree with you that this fan might be overkill but it came at the recommendation of my local hydro store so I went along with it. I get the feeling he may be stocking it mainly to cater to people running 1k lights so a fan controller may be the way to go for my purposes. I would imaging that a controller would allow more control over ambient box temperature as well which could be a bonus.
