Are we cyborgs in the making?

    People currently have,

    -Pacemakers
    -Artificial hips and joints
    -Contact Lenses
    -Fake teeth
    -Fake body parts
    -RFID Chips
-Other things I'm too elevated to think about rather than proceeding

Technology is about to bestow Google Glass type devices onto mainstream humanity, linking everyone to their Facebook or Google search bar permanently. Furthermore, it will make each owner an audio and video recording station. The cell phone is kind of doing it already but there is a big difference between a camera in pockets and purses and a camera that is at face level and whose continuous comfort developments will ensure the users keep them on longer and longer or not even have to take them off eventually. This comfort technological development has been observed over many other less sophisticated devices already. Headphones and Bluetooth speaking devices for example.

The kicker to all of those components: They are all constantly getting more and more sophisticated. Whatever you may consider an absurd version of any of those items above, may just be a matter of 5 to 10 years of continuous successful research. 20 or 30 years into the future the only thing we know is that we honestly have no idea.

Considering our already-use of the items listed, it seems we are already well invested in the endeavor of replacing parts of us that do not work or do not make us happy. After all, we live in a world where people are willing to change their gender. (Not pro or contra just saying from an organ changing perspective) Is it then inconceivable that we would want to get rid of an old an ailing liver, in exchange for a perfectly functioning state of the art artificial one? Could we, by the time we reach our 90's get to be in the greatest shape of our entire life by replacing all those parts not essential to keeping us mentally human. Obviously, no one is talking about a scenario where we lose our humanity. The scenario imagined is that you are still 100% mentally and emotionally you. Just the parts that were responsible for running that you have been replaced by better functioning artificial versions of them.

Before I start sounding even crazier, don't forget, we are >already doing this<. The only question is how far are we going to take what is essentially body augmentation technology. Also consider that any and all successful technology in such fields would have colossal profit potential for anyone who develops it. If you are the company that can give people a completely brand new infallible heart, then you are dwarfing what any Fortune 500 company makes. My point being, there is a huge incentive in the marketplace for this already, so companies with resources to pull this off have a significant reason to attempt it. This would explain why medical technology has always only been on the overall rise. Never a regress. The need and desire is potentially infinite.

So yeah, pending a global catastrophe that creates scientific standstill or regress, are we going to be shopping for artificial body parts within a decade or three?

  2. Interesting topic. I believe In the next hundred years people will become immortalized. People will have exoskeletons and chips but we unfortunately won't live to this time.
