Cultivation Employee Dies by Cannabis Inhalation

  1. Much like some folks are allergic to tobacco smoke, I've seen the same with cannabis smoke allergies (my wife gets mild reactions if I'm hot boxing the garage for example)

Article says the employee apparently suffered fatal asthma attack. I could definitely see it being possible that someone with a cannabis allergy could unknowingly or otherwise get themselves exposed enough at a commercial facility to trigger an unfortunately fatal asthma attack.

Interesting if esoteric safety fact to file away for me at least.

  2. Dispensary was fined by OSHA - questions if mold was the problem, or if allergic reaction to cannabis, which is rare.....but who works at a cannabis shop that doesn't smoke....like no one....

  3. Doesn't have to be cannabis dust- inhaling ANY fine particulate matter can cause death! Flour, silica dust, coal dust, saw dust - all of them can kill if inhaled in sufficient quantities!

Years ago, when I was doing "finishing work" on redwood statuettes, I always wore a mask to keep the redwood dust out of my lungs and nose. The wife of a fellow worker even gave me a hug when I chided her husband about his not wearing a mask as he worked! She wore a mask while working, and wanted him to do the same.

And you can be allergic to any plant, even cannabis! The poor girl in the article likely didn't use a mask, even though they were available. This event was very sad since it was entirely preventable!

  4. Question should be what dust can a human breath in that will not kill you ?
Answer is none and every supervisor should know that, Safety is always # 1
As far as I know not one case of any supervisor on any mine site ( MSHA ) ever been criminally prosecuted and sentenced to the penitentiary for having a fatality of any kind. I don't know about OSHA .

  5. My wife hates the smell of fresh trimmed weed and her nose will sting and become somewhat swollen and hard to breath through. She also has an allergy to tomato plants when she picks them she gets all itchy and breaks out in little bumps where the plant has touched her.
I have to do all my trimming outdoors which can really smell up the Hood.

  6. @TallCotton Cross sensitization between tomatoes and cannabis has been noted in studies-

Sensitization and Allergy to Cannabis sativa Leaves in a Population of Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum)-Sensitized Patients. (Spain) (abst – 2008) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18268387

Also some strains can be worse than others,
