Thoughts/Comments, speak your mind GC! I for one feel much the same way as the people standing outside that place, as I am sure is obvious to anyone who has seen my posts. By the by, it was a video response to the following video for some reason. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NaEj3g5GOYA"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NaEj3g5GOYA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Its easy to poke fun at the bible and question the reality of some of what it preaches, all in an attempt to attack faith and make a mockery of Christianity. But of all the things the Bible has introduced to us, faith is of the most powerful and is the of the greatest importance. You cannot mock faith. Those with true faith are unphased by these feable attempts to discredit the Christian belief, and this is feable. Its hardly funny, so it isnt stand up comedy, and its not educational so its obvioulsy not a seminar. What is the purpose of this if not only to attack Christianity? And for what reason do they do it?
The reason is that christianity is wrong about what it teaches. You might want to pop over to the sexism in evolution thread to find out why. It isn't a case of questioning the reality of anything, that makes it sound like christianity has an equal case to its opponents. What christianity teaches about science and evolution is wrong, and provably so, without the need for faith. Christianity has JUST faith and no evidence. You can certainly mock faith if it leads the faithful into error and bigotry. So, why does christianity get attacked so much? Well, here on GC we see tens of jesus camp trolls, trying to stir up christian debate and score points here in the name of da lord. And it's always, always so obvious that it does tend to get on people's nerves after a while. Christianity is the only religion that sees fit to try to sell door to door and foist itself on people whether they want it or not. But, I digress. Christianity is becoming less and less popular because (and anyone here with their own reasons, post them here): 1) Christianity exerts its influence in politics, when it's archaic ideas are dangerous and are used as a means to rally people to war. 2) Christianity exerts influence in education, destroys intelligent, un-biased inquiry into anything that it thinks may damage its 'truth'. 3) Christianity exerts its influence in medicine, and is actually preventing some treatments from being use in US hospitals. 4) Christianity exerts its influence in science, and is doing its best to, again, discredit anything it sees as a threat and is holding some forms of research back. Christianity has NO place in any of the above. It has neither honour nor tolerance, attested by the fact that almost all christian wars and persecutions have been against other christians. Christianity can't even decide amongst itself which form of christianity is the true faith, what god is, whether jc was the son of god or a travelling brush salesman. Be christian by all means, spread the word (to those who want it, not to those who you think SHOULD want it) and you'll have no problems here or in the rest of the world. But when you want power in the areas I talk about above you stop just being a nicey-nice faith, you become a threat. Please, next time a fellow christian asks why christians are 'attacked', tell them just that. You are a dangerous threat to life and liberty whilst you want involvement in every facet of life and control over people's minds. Stop that, and the attacks will stop. MelT
because the bullshit can only smell like roses for so long. here's why i turned my back on christianity... 1. the thought that god knows what i'm doing even before i do it just doesn't work for me. i could do anything at any given moment and forever alter any possible future for myself. i could start taking some college classes and earn a master's degree, or i could start injecting heroin every day for the next 2 years. the choice is mine and mine alone. to think that my life has already been planned out for me in every aspect is just ridiculous. at any time, i can do anything i want. i could even spend 4 hours typing this post, and then click the back button and never submit it. surely god would want this, yet you're reading, thus i've submitted this post. 2. offering at church. if god is more important than life itself then is it really necessary to attend church with all the air conditioning, lights, videos, etc? why not stand in a field? that way, the excuse of needing the offering to 'pay the bills' can't be used. if you truly love god, you'll do whatever it takes to worship him. of course, you could always say that it may be too hot or too cold to stand outside and listen to a sermon for an hour, but how can you turn around and say you owe your life to god when you're unwilling to give it when listening to his word? a heat stroke or frostbite will only take you one step closer to meeting the man that loves you enough to let you die. 3. politics. this one has already been covered. "let's go attack those people!" "why?" "god said so!" "god talked to you?" "yes..." "what'd he say?" "............"
[quote name='MelT']The reason is that christianity is wrong about what it teaches. You might want to pop over to the sexism in evolution thread to find out why. What christianity teaches about science and evolution is wrong, and provably so, without the need for faith. Christianity has JUST faith and no evidence. Even science cant account for our origins. For every peice of evidence they find in support of evolution it seems they find some that contradicts that very same assumption. The argument is just full of arrogant "my-siders" that really dont have any interest in truth anymore. Until one side or the other comes up with some concrete evidence, which doesn't exist regardless of what either side may suggest, this isn't something worth arguing because you nor me no what we're even talking about as much as we could ACT like we do. Christianity has NO place in any of the above. You're confusing Christianity with morals. You can remove one's faith completely from the equation and you will still see these issues debated and protested by those that have a sence of morality. It just so happens many religious people, not only Christians, have a strong sence of morality. Just because we have the capabilities to do things doesn't mean that the majority of people want it to be done. Their are consequences to everything we do; that needs to be taken into account regardless of ones denomination. You are a dangerous threat to life and liberty whilst you want involvement in every facet of life and control over people's minds. Stop that, and the attacks will stop. You've obviously had some very poor experiences with the religious community. Their are actually a lot of good people with nothing less than good intent involved with religion. Many great things have been accomplished in the name of religion. Of course their are the fanatics and religious nuts and those who use it as a weapon, but these are the exception, not the rule. Quit with the "you"'s. Im not a threat to anyone's liberty, much less their lives. You seem to be the only one perpetuating any sort of aggressive bahavior that could be confused as "an attack". You sound a a bit paranoid actually.
Not yet. They can make pretty significant inferences though. And to claim that religion can is bunk; it is the "God-in-the-gaps" conviction and is an argumentum ad ignorantiam; and therefore logically inconsistent. Really? Where is your evidence of this? Seems to me, this is just a hand-waving assertion. Well see, Science HAS found concrete evidence for evolution, quite a lot of it actually. What exactly does a false sense of moral superiority have to do with Creationism? I have some quotes I'd like to share with you, in respect to your views on religion, and before when you talked about faith. Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence. -Richard Dawkins Faith is powerful enough to immunize people against all appeals to pity, to forgiveness, to decent human feelings. It even immunizes them against fear, if they honestly believe that a martyr's death will send them straight to heaven. -Richard Dawkins I am against religion because it teaches us to be satisfied with not understanding the world. -Richard Dawkins

Unfortunately, the bad (ie, millions of people dead or persecuted for being the wrong kind of christian) outweighs the good. The problem is that you're missing the point, read my post. This isn't about the personalities or morals of individual christians who, just as any atheist can be, are capable of great good - but about christianity's place in politics, science and education. Religion has no place in them, full stop. But the sorry thing is that christianity insists that it should have a say in what we all do and think, and that is totally unacceptable. MelT

As long as the large majority of people are religous, whether it be Christianity or otherwise, their beliefs are going to be mirrored in the politics of our country; thats the nature of our democracy... to impose the will of the people. If its the people's will to enforce moral right based on biblical belief then its the governments job to enforce this. Unfortunately for you the majority of Americans dont agree with your argument. Most Americans side with "one nation under God" philosophy and believe we are the strong nation we are because of this upbringing, and they vote likewise. Removing religious influence from these aspects of American culture is impossible because religious beliefs are so intertwined with ethics that it becomes impossble to tell one from the other. I think we already make the best attempt we can at it, and I am sure you would argue its not enough; but religon is much too intertwined with our culture to single it out in the way you would like done. We are a Chritian nation... at least for the time being.
I think politics would do better with a "don't ask, don't tell policy." Keep every religious view out, even those that oppose the idea of God and keep it strictly politics. Make the states choose on a morality issue and keep the government out of what I do at home. They should make a law called "Stay the fuck out of my business," meaning everyone leaves me and my ideas alone unless I bring them to you. Of course this is to much to ask and goes against the human mind. Gossiping FTW!
