Couple questions about Mom

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by BadAxe, Mar 18, 2010.

  1. So Moms are selected for cloning purposes correct? So once you select your mom (no need to discuss selection process, I am sure that could be a whole thread on its own), you separate her and keep her in a veg state to be used for cuttings. Am I correct up till this point? If so, here are my questions.

How long can you keep a mom alive in a veg state? What is her expected lifespan? And about how many cuttings would you get from a Mom in her lifetime? (I am pretty sure that answer will be it depends, lol).

Also, how do you keep Mom in a permanent veg state, but also control how big she grows?

And I think I know the answer to this, but I will ask anyway. All cuttings from the mother, would yield the same potency buds correct? All things being equal in the grow environment, the buds would not get better or worse with each cutting, but remain consistent? To answer that question, make it hypothetical. Lets state that all cuttings that the mother ever produces are grown identically, with the exact same conditions. In that situation, the strain remains constant, or fluctuates, as far as potency goes?

    Thanks. :)

  2. I have these questions as well.

  3. How long can you keep a mom alive in a veg state? for as long as you like, just seen a pic of one that is 20yrs old.

What is her expected lifespan? see above

And about how many cuttings would you get from a Mom in her lifetime? ALOT

how do you keep Mom in a permanent veg state, but also control how big she grows?
24/7 light schedule and just keep her trimed to control height, most straings will only grow to a certain height though.

  4. thank you.

Also, how much light does a typical mom need? 100W?

  5. Hey, I don't have much experience in cloning but I will try to answer this the best I can through my readings. You can pretty much keep a mother plant in veg forever pretty much all depends on how much space you have to work with, lighting, pot size etc...

You can pretty much continue to take cuttings as new growth occurs while in veg I believe. You keep a mother plant in veg with HID lighting higher wattage/lumens the better, CFLs are not really practical or efficient enough keeping it in veg for a long period of time. Ways you can control on how big she gets is topping/pruning I believe.

Clones will for the most part carry the same exact traits as the mother plant growth, potency, and yield (may vary a little bit I believe) with keeping conditions the same. Hope this has helped some I believe this is all correct pretty sure. Best of luck.

  6. generally its 100w per plant but i would throw some CFL's on the sides to keep her healthy and bushy. depending on heigth the 100w my not penetrate the canopy so the side lights help alot.

  7. Hey, I would really like to thank you for your reply, you really helped this Phillies fan out. Thanks bro. ;)

  8. not trying to start a pissing match with you but CFL's are more than efficient enough to keep a mother in veg as long as you get the proper wattage and color spectrum for vegging. my mother has been in veg for almost 7 months using only CFL's and she looks perfect. like i said, not trying to start a pissing match but no since in the guy wasting a bunch on money on HID just for vegging.

  9. No problem at all brotha, LOL silly Phillies fan :p hey it's real rough being a Mets fan let me tell you us Mets fans always get to say there's always next year & have our hearts broken every season lol :(

  10. So you just keep her on grow nutes? Is it better to go with soil for a mother?

  11. Yes grow nutes, the longer it's in veg & bigger it gets the heavier doses it may need. It's all personal preference & what your comfortable with on that soil or hydro.
