So I have a room in my home that I'd like to convert into a grow room. The room is 22'x20' with 10' ceiling that slopes (not a flat ceiling). There are 5 windows and a glass sliding door in the room. I plan on having the sliding door removed and bricked in and double doors added to the entryway of the room. I would also like to take the carpet out due to the wear and tear and mess I anticipate. Aside from that, for growing purposes what can I do to this room to convert it for optimum growing use? The ceilings are too high to hang lights from directly. Would I have to frame out a portion of the room to hang HID's? Could I vent just out of a window? I guess my biggest question is can this room itself be converted without needing to frame off part of the room? What would you do with this space to make it a good grow room? Many thanks in advance. Room view from the wall where my tent currently resides: Entryway to room: With the 8 ft tent in the room I am only using a portion of the room to grow. I would like to use the entire space as this room is already a dedicated "plant room" and I want to get use and bud out of that space.
That's 440 sq ft. You said your tent is 8 feet. I'm going to assume that means 8'x4' which would be 32 sq ft. even if its 8'x8' its 64 sq ft. 440 would take an insane amount of light to fill, and you would need to completely black out the windows if you want to flower plants in there.
It is an insane amount of space to light up but I think the yield would be worth it. I could blackout the windows with black decals on the glass inside and outside in addition to black blackout blinds and blackout curtains. How many 1000w fixtures would the room require? Would I have to frame the room out to have lower ceilings for lights to hang from? My current tent is 8ft tall,10 ft wide and has 2 4' side walls.
I would frame it up, particularly because of the slanted roof, but you also don't want your plants getting super tall anyways unless you want popcorn buds. As for how many fixtures I have no idea, but it would be a lot. You would get an enormous amount of bud though.
So build a smaller room within the space as opposed to trying to deal with ceiling and windows? I have a family full of construction workers and they all smoke so my construction work would be free. Only thing I am dreading is that first electric bill but all in the name of cannabis. Any idea where I can find info on how many watts or lumens I'd need for such a space?
Have you been growing long? That’s a hell of an electricity bill. To fill that room, you’re talking like 16 1000w fixtures. Not to mention the stink that’s going to create. If it’s legal there, you have less worries. But that doesn’t seem like it would be a stealthy grow.
Hey, great project you got your self there! I hope you can figure everything out and be on your way. As far as i am aware from speaking to my local hydro shop owner, you would need 1*1000w/ 5*5 foot print if you don't have a light mover. If you add light movers, you can reduce the amount of light needed by at least a few. You should also look into LEDs and cobs. You can get good efficiency in terms of power consumption/heat/usable light. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
If it were me, I would build a false wall around the windows and door with the blinds and curtains drawn. And I would build 4x4 or 5x5 “rooms” around the room. That would make it easier for different strains and different cycles and a perpetual grow that can be harvested every 1-3 weeks. Actually that’s exactly what I’m doing in a similar situation.
what is your budget? been there done that. i would build a wooden frame all around the room . there will be places to hang the lighting. i would put a new door way in . just like a regular door very easy. the windows you should put blinds up so nobody can see inside then on the inside you need to use reflective material over those windows and do the walls. need a heavy duty tarp on that carpet. you need a major carbon filter. a mini split ac system. there will be zero smell all set up total cost for your room should be less then 10k. with the best equipment. fly me over . ill select the equipment install everything it will be turn key. legal work only. for your plant room. most important you need to add a electrical sub junction box ill install this as well. it will be able to pass codes if needed. total setup in about 3 days done correct. never vent out the windows. you can not control your humidity. introduces bugs. molds. we could run natural gas to a co2 generator as well. and add a controller.
Cannabis cultivation is legal here in DC. I'm a short, petite female that struggled to erect the 4x8 tent I'm growing in now. If you'd seriously consider flying in and helping me shop and build I would compensate you and pay lodging, food and travel. Please send me a pm.
Firsty I have 4 dobe/rottie mutts and I LOVE your avi <3 I live in Washington DC where cultivation, possession and recreational use is legal. The limitations on residential grows is 8 plants per adult (defined by law as 18+) in the home but large scale growers never see enforcement so I have no concerns about the scale of grow I am attempting to set up for. 16 fixtures is a lot but I expected it. My electric bill now is close to 700 a month and I have 3 large tents that each run electric sky es300 fixtures the 4x8's run 4 fixtures in each the 2x4 tents run 1 fixture each. I am not ready for the bill from 16 fixtures (lol) BUT! I really want to scale up my grow and DC being a legal area to cultivate I was thinking about offering some of the grow space to a few friends that cannot grow in their homes so I'd essentially be renting out grow space, light,my nutes and labor which is legal because my labor is cultivation (legal) and the use of my home is rental space. So long as I am not selling cannabis I am not in violation of any local laws. I have ZERO idea how I intend to control odor and I have considered that. That worries me but smell (worst case scenario) can just do it's thing as cultivation is legal and I'm on a half acre so not right up under a neighbor. 16 fixtures puts ish into perspective though. I'm assuming those 16 fixtures would be 1000w @ . That there is the scariest part.
Oh boy, could you imagine how bright that room would be with QB's. You'd need a welding helmet during lights on. Lol
I'd walk in and throw my arms back and my chest forward, cock my head back and just bask in it lol. Never tried QB's but have heard they're good stuff. Invested in the es300's before I'd even heard about Quantums
