Contactor Questions

    I will soon be growing with a Sylvania Grolux 400wHP. I know I need a contactor but I have a few questions.

    1.What exactly does the contactor do?
    2.Will I need to use a contactor for my 24 hour periods or can I just wait until I start using the timer for flowering.
