Confused: Post Germination

Discussion in 'Indoor Cannabis Growing' started by Whodi, Aug 26, 2006.

  1. I have read and watched videos but am still confused about post germination. Everyone does it differently.

I am going to germinate my seeds using the paper towel method, then plant the germinated seed, tap root down, into the soil, in a 16 ounce cup.

My question is: What do I do next, exactly?

    Do I:

    1) cover the cup with a ziplock bag, to keep moisture in, and keep it in total darkness until it sprouts above the soil, and right when it sprouts above soil, give it immediate 18/6 lighting or

    2) cover the cup with a ziplock bag and put it into 18/6 lighting immediately, even though it has not sprouted above the soil?

I know this is a total noob question, but I am still confused on what to do EXACTLY after the seeds germinate. Your help is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Whodi

  2. Plant the little guy, and then put it under some fluoros for about 2 weeks or so, then move it under an HPS if you have one, thats all, you really dont have to cover it... I'd recommend keeping it under 24/0 light for the first few weeks at least...

  3. yeah plant the seedling and when it breaks ground keep the light 24/0 for 2 weeks and u can switch to 18/6.

  4. Let me help ya, don't put them under the light until after they start popping through the soil. Once the first one pops through, put them under fluoros, if you are using an HID light make sure you raise it at least 3" to start and lower it to 2" after the 5th day. if you are using both(highly recommended) then switch to the HID after 2 weeks or when your fluoros no longer is capable of illuminating your plants completely. Oh yeah, start the fluoros out at 6" from the top of your container and lower to 2-3" after 48 hrs. This is to aclimate your seedlings to the light. Your germination method with paper towels is good, I would only add that prior to putting them in the paper towel drop them in a cup of distilled water, I find they germinate a whole lot faster this way. As for your seeds, I expect your using some bag seeds, pick out the ones that are dark but not black and perferably they have a spotted pattern on them(indicates mature seeds). Soil??? hope you stay away from the time release stuff, it will have you pulling your hair out. Oh yeah, one last thing you can put them under 24/7 light all the way through veg state but you need to start with a minimum of 18 hrs.

  5. I don't have fluros. I will be using MH/HPS conversion ballast. And i am using high quality female seeds only.

  6. keep ur light farther above than u normally would or else the seedling will dry out too much... also dont do 24/0 lighting... 18/6 is much better it allows the roots to develop

  7. this is what i have done in the past.put the seeds in a cup of water filled up 1\3 of the way then cover the cup with a piece of tin foil and put it in a dark place.then once i see the seed crack and the tiny root appearing i plant them a 1\4 inch under my soil ,u can do this with the tip of your pinky.it doesnt matter wich way u plant that seed it will search for light and sprout north wards.then i water them making sure i dampen the soil but not 2 much ,dont want too drown them.then water every 2-3 days, too check if they need water just stick ur finger in the soil u will know if they need watered .never let the soil dry up ,or it was a waisted experience.........then again trial and error is the only way u will learn .good luck and all the best :smoking: p.s light should start a meter above ur plants ,also wait till ur plant starts 2 sprout through the soil before u put the lights on ......................(hps)

  8. Okay thanks everyone. I guess my main concern was when to put light on them. I take it everyone agrees that there should be no light until the seed sprouts above the soil.

  9. you can have the lights on them as soon as they're in the soil, it won't really effect them one way or another until they rise up.
