confused about tolerance

Discussion in 'Experienced Cannabis Enthusiasts' started by silkyjohnson, Apr 3, 2008.

  1. i was just wondering if someone could explain to me how tolerance works?

obviously the more often you smoke, the higher your tolerance is and the harder it is to get stoned
but why does this happen, like what goes on in your brain?

i feel this information is valuable because the more i know about tolerance, the more i can try to reduce it effectively!

    thanks

  2. I read from another thread that the thc gets built up on the receptors in your brain, and it takes some time for it to break off.

  3. ahhh sorry, shouldve searched but i was stoned my bad

  4. Nah that's not true. THC is metabolized first into 11 hydroxy THC. It is then further metabolized into 100s of metabolites that are stored in your fat tissue, and are all NON psychoactive and have absolutely no effect on the body. The two main metabolites doctors look for in piss tests are glucuronic acid and THC-COOH, and 11 hydroxy THC is excreted through feces.

Tolerance builds up as a result of physiological and psychological tolerance. As you smoke more, your mind becomes more accustomed to the high, so a psychological tolerance builds up in that aspect allowing your mind to cope more with the effects of THC. Physiological tolerance occurs in the cannabinoid receptors. The more these receptors are activated, the less active they actually become. If there is enough THC in your system, these receptors will essentially shut off and become totally inactive, leaving you unable to get high totally.
