Concentrates: Tincture or Infusion?

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by Heinous Anus, Aug 30, 2023.

  1. Hello,
For several years, I’ve been following @BrassNwood Guide: Hallucinating Hash Capsules for Hemp Heads and it’s been absolutely fantastic with amazing potency and results. Seriously, the best method I’ve ever tried. I use concentrates like shatter or wax instead of flower, but the method is basically the same:

    - Decarb 1-2 grams of concentrate at 240F for 40 minutes (or until it stops bubbling)
    - Add 3 Tablespoons of Coconut Oil and mix throughly. I have a soy allergy, so I skip the lecithin.
    - I then put a lid on the container and freeze for several hours.
    - Thaw and bring it back to room temp and begin to fill caps with a dropper. I store the caps in the fridge and they keep for months.

With the full dose caps, I’ll start feeling the effects within 20-45 minutes and it lasts for 6-8 hours with incredible potency.

With that recipe being a home run, I’ve been curious about trying to make my own tincture next and was thinking about applying this similar method.

I would decarb my concentrates as described before, but instead of adding the coconut oil, I would add the decarbed concentrates to a few ounces of high proof alcohol like Everclear. Mix and shake thoroughly before storing in a glass bottle with a dropper.

Would this method work as a “tincture” or is more of an infusion? Would I have cook this down any further or would it be able to be kept in a cool, dark spot as is, without losing potency? Is there anything I’m missing regarding tinctures? I’m a veteran toker, but still fairly new to the world of edibles lol.

Thank you to all who help out! :gc_rocks:

  4. Hash Master 5000 - Dry Ice Method, Hash Oil Capsules, Everclear Tincture, RSO

Psam's thread is a great resource and here is my own companion thread to the capsule thread.

    Decarb 240 F for 40 minutes
Mix frozen 190 proof and weed, shake 10 seconds and press out with metal potato ricer.
    Done.
Wet mouth with water or spit, shoot in eyedropper of tincture, swish like mouthwash hitting all oral surfaces for as long as possible. This will hit as delta-9-THC the same as inhalation. Fast acting and equally fast to wear off.
If you must soften the burn mix with an eyedropper or two of water before tossing in.

For sure try the sunflower lecithin as the bioavailability boost with lecithin is substantial.

  6. Thank you, I’ll be sure to spend some time searching through there.
Never thought about that, thank you!

Thank you! I’ll definitely get myself in that thread as well. Do you think the method of adding the decarbed concentrate directly to the 190 proof would work as well?

I figured I am skipping the middle man of having to extract anything from flower and going directly to the source.

  7. I was gonna say that.

It's what I use for making edibles. :)

  8. You don't need to mix it with more alcohol than you need but you may need to let it sit for a couple of hours and shake it once in a while to get it all dispersed. If you warm the alcohol the concentrate will disperse faster.

  9. I know it works very well with both bud and Hash. I've not personally experimented with making tincture from top end concentrates, but I do see it done quite often.

  10. Just curious.

Can you make tincture with Vodka,
or does it have to be Everclear?

  11. From what I keep reading and seeing, it has to be 190 proof, like Everclear or Food Grade Ethanol which is around 200 proof.
This will be my first foray into the world of alcohol tinctures and super curious myself.

  12. You can but it will be very "Green" and more bitter than need be due to all the extra water extracting a shit load of chlorophyl. The higher the proof the faster and more complete the dissolving of the trichome heads will be. Use 100 proof or higher if possible.

Decarb weed, freeze both parts separately. Combine, shake 10 seconds and done. Press out wet weed with metal potato ricer for large jobs or a garlic press for small runs.

Avoid working in active tincture bare handed as it will transdermal stone the shit out of you in all likelihood. It knocked me for a long and deep one.

  13. Thanks. It's hard to get Everclear around here
    is why I asked.

  14. I make my tinctures with concentrate (hash rosin) and 200 proof. I just add the amount of alcohol I want in the finished product. I like a strength of ~50 mg/ml.

  15. If you're starting with a concentrate I would think you can mix it with whatever alcohol you want .,As long as you don't try to reduce it again.,which brings the water in whatever you used to come into play.,
Also remember the concentrate is an oil.,and won't mix well with products with a lot of water in it.,

  16. You can reduce a tincture made with an alcohol/water mixture such as vodka but as the alcohol evaporates, at some point the tincture will turn cloudy, that means you've reduced it too much and the oil is coming out. If that happens, add more alcohol until it clears up or your oil will stick to the sides of the container or make a bathtub ring at the top.

If you're making tincture from concentrate and vodka, you can add the concentrate a little at a time and when it starts clouding up, add a little more vodka until it clears up. That would be as potent as the vodka allows.

  17. Since the all-knowing state "California" in its wisdom decided to save all 40 million of us from possible alcohol burns (1 bartender sets 1 customer on fire) and now all I can buy is 120 proof ""Ever Clear". I'd bought a small 3 gallon still to recover the alcohol when reducing tincture to FECO so now I buy cheap store brand vodka when I need to make up losses and run it through the still and leave most of the water behind.
While I can order 190 proof from out of state the shipping was breaking the bank and all this costs me is a pound or 2 of propane.

  18. Vodka works fine. It just has to be 150+ proof.
