Computer Won't sleep

Discussion in 'Silicon (v)Alley' started by LittleGreenMan1, Jan 15, 2010.

  1. I can't get my windows XP computer to stay asleep. It always wakes itself up after an indeterminate amount of time. sometimes 30 seconds. sometimes a few minutes. help?!

    +rep to anyone with ideas:confused:

  2. Give it Nyquil? Hibernate it, shut it down all the way? Is anything else awkward happening with it?

  3. Is this kid serious? Computers don't get tired bro...

  4. LOL me? No I wasn't being serious about the whole Nyquil thing. I was just making a joke ._.

  5. laptop or desktop?
do you have a wireless mouse or keyboard, because moving/typing could be waking it. what i think it is is some program in the background that keeps starting or updating. check if some of your programs are on auto-update. Also something i found on another forum was this

    start /select (control panel)
    then select
(network connections) now you will want to right click onto the icon that says it is connected
    then select
    (properties)
then slect out of that window that appears (configure) then select the power management tab) you will now see 2 boxs/ one will state (allow this device to bring the computer out of standby ) if this box is checked (uncheck it )

then check to see if this resolves the issue

  6. Get Grisoft's AVG antivirus, and the anti-rootkit

Spybot search and destroy as well as hijackthis.

If you have any Symantec software installed, get rid of it.

You sound like your system has been compromised (you are infected)...you can try to clean it up, but a clean OS install is the only way to be sure you are safe (full low level format before install).
