I've only grown pumpkins in straight up compost, and that's only because I tossed a rotten pumpkin on the compost heap. If it is well cooked there shouldn't be much risk of disease or pests. I usually mix equal parts compost and dirt (top soil). Sometimes I add sphagnum moss too if there's a lot of sand in the soil.
