Combination modem/router

Discussion in 'Silicon (v)Alley' started by Jazzyj, Aug 11, 2011.

  1. Hey blades! I recently got my own place, and I'm looking for a good quality combination modem and wireless router. My ISP is comcast in central Illinois, if that matters. I'm preferably looking for something I could buy from walmart/meijer/bestbuy, but I could order online if necessary. So, does anybody have any recommendations? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Let me start by saying that I'm opposed to the combination units. In my experience they suck. Their features are limited, they have a high failure rate, etc.

But, since you asked, you want this one:

Newegg.com - MOTOROLA SBG6580 SURFboard Wireless Cable Modem Gateway Ethernet Port DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 3.0

However if you can afford it I would get this: Newegg.com - MOTOROLA SB6120 Cable Modem SURFboard eXtreme DOCSIS 3.0
Plus something like this: Newegg.com - Cisco Valet M20 802.11b/g/n Gigabit Wireless HotSpot Router up to 300Mbps

If you want to get a really nice set-up, get a dedicated router and a dedicated wireless access point, but I didn't go that far since it is excessive for most home users.

Whatever you decide on, make sure the cable modem says DOCSIS 3.0. It is faster, almost guaranteed. Just by swapping in a DOCSIS 3.0 modem my download speeds jumped by 10Mbps easily.
