Was wondering if color changing pipes are toxic in any way or if they produce any fumes. I was only curious because I know they use silver to make it change color and most metals are toxic or poisonous if smoked out of.
Uhm my first thought is to say no, it can't hurt you. I've never seen this topic brought up though so I can't be sure. I would imagine the silver is INSIDE the glass and the heat makes it change color, so I feel pretty confident saying that it's not harmful. But what do I know

But you could be tight the silver maybe inside the glass.
the fuming is inside the inner wall of the pipe, so it is exposed. i wouldn't worry about it though because the resin will coat the color change (providing a dark background so the color appears), and the temperature for fuming silver has got to be way higher than a standard lighter.
The colors come out in color changing pipes when you smoke out of them because there is resin building up in the pipe, that's all. Clean it and it goes back to it's original look. Glass is the safest way to smoke, if you're inhaling any toxins from the materials in the glass then it was shitty craftsmanship.
The only way color changing glass can hurt you is by shattering it and getting stabbed with it. The temperature needed to fume pipes with silver and gold is much, MUCH higher than the temperature it reaches with a bic or even a torch lighter. They wouldn't put it into a pipe if it was poisonous.
The pipe changes color because you constantly put heat to it when you smoke. All glass pieces are color changing.
Not true. Resin buildup is what makes the color appear. Clean it and it goes away. I have a fumed spoon
i thought color changing glass just meant glass that was somewhat see through, so when resin built up on it would change colors..huh?!?!
It's def the resin. Take a clean color changing pipe and hold it against a dark background, and you'll see the colors. It's about contrast, I think.
I'd like to point out that silver and most other precious metals are not toxic to humans and can pass through your intestines intact as long as the metal does not cut you inside. Oh and it has a boiling point of above 4000 degrees farenheight. I think your cool smoking out of a silver fumed pipe with a bic lighter that rarely exceeds 600 degrees. You could eat the thing and the glass would be the only problem.
