College: Yay Or Nay?

Discussion in 'General' started by queenofnugs, Jun 29, 2014.

  1. So I'm curious on people's opinions on college. Do you/did you go to college? Do you think college is worth it, or is the debt too much? Does it just depend what major you choose?

I just finished my second year of college but my family is officially too broke to continue paying without taking out loans. I'm debating what to do now and I'm open to any opinions or thoughts regarding college in general.

If you already graduated from college I would love to know what your major was and how you're currently doing

  2. When I was hiring people and there were two people I considered equally suitable in personality, experience and skill set, except one graduated from college or university and one didn't, I'd hire the grad 100% of the time...

It doesn't always offset other things, but any little thing you can do to place yourself ahead of others helps...just like volunteer work trumps playing xbox on a resume...

You need money? The homeboy Slick is always looking for fresh meat. You'll get your own corner and no competition

Granted you gotta set up the hot dog cart every morning and it can be a pain, also gotta supply your own condiments

  4. True, but is it worth being put ahead of other job apps in exchange for huge debt? :/

  5. At least I have a plan B established

It is very much worth it, it shows employers you are capable of learning. It maters a lot what your degree is in, as a bachelor of arts in english or any BA is far less useful than say a bachelor of science in engineering, or mathematics, or computer science, or biology, or chemistry, or physics, and I could go on for a while. why is it this way? it is 2014, these degrees are more useful in our advanced society.

  7. Debt: Yay Or Nay?

  8. True, thanks for your input :)

I'm in school to become a teacher right now but I somehow don't think that's going to pay off my debts too well lmao. Hence why I'm debating what to do

  9.
Hard to answer...are you pursuing an education in a specific area, an area you wish to seek employment in?

If so, then a resounding yes...

If not, then what other things do you have that can serve to place you above other applicants for a job?

When a hiring manager gets 200 applications for one job opening, what qualities do you have to set you apart from others...

Showing dedication and initiative by pursuing an education is something employers like to see...

i would take out loans if your sure you want to finish your degree and persue a career in your area of study. i think college isnt worth it if your just going for a degree to just have one.

cause you could have just taken the money you spent on tuition and started a small business or something.  40-60 grand is alot of money

  11. The money can come from a lot of places, first you apply for FAFSA. Then you look at what you school offers and it will be easy to find out because you just go ask financial aid in reference to scholarships, also you can apply for a direct scholarship from the school when you apply if I remember right. Also there are numerous other sources offering scholarships if you meet certain preconditions and complete requirements generally, like an essay or a meeting.

  12.
Being a teacher can be a good job, and cannot be accomplished without an education...

And congress voted no to lower your interest rates on federal student loans to market rates of 3.5-4% from 14%.

    Thanks again republicans.

    How far along are you?

For all the shit people talk about how little it pays, I'm pretty sure the benefits are really good and the pay is not that bad. It depends on the county. You're young, pay isn't all that matters, there is 401k matching and dental and health insurance. Teachers even get pensions I thought, but that may have given way to just high 401k matching, probably depends where you are at.

  14. My moms been a teacher since she was 22...still teachin too. 1st grade but I dunno how she deals with all those lil kids everyday lol. But she loves it! She had to go to school....

If you do go down that path......Id recommend teachin in Public schools compared to Private.....will halft to deal with more BS but the pays better.

  15. I'm in school to become a high school English teacher. Financially, I'm not sure that with debt it will do me that much good. However I mainly want to do it for other reasons besides money (helping struggling students, fighting bullying, etc)

At the same time, I have a few other career paths I could take that there's no way I could really pursue if I'm a full-time student. I've been doing a little modeling but can't really take it much further without constant traveling...which obviously can't happen if you have classes to attend. I've already had to turn down two opportunities due to school.

Also, this is going to sound weird, but it seems as if the universe has rejected my decision to go to school a few times. I had an incident last year where the school refused to refund me 2 grand for a class I never even took, and my parents had to threaten a lawsuit before receiving our money back. Another time, I had to take a medical withdrawl due to an illness I had, and the dean herself told me I would be refunded for the course if I took a MW (my father was also there and witnessed her saying this). A month later the bitch was fired and the university claimed they never refund money for medical withdrawls. Started making me wonder if college is a scam

but my school probably just sucks lol

  16. Your cute so you wont have to worry either way

Marry the first dude with money you meet, divorce, ????, profit

No but seriously have you checked to see if you can get financial aid? Helps a lot for me at least

  17. so where are these modeling photographs?

  18. In my portfolio and on facebook? Lol I can post one if ya want

but seriously college yes or nah

  19. we need pics

and i would go with college.  or persue your modeling career which will inevidably lead to your future porn career.

  20. Naw not gonna do porn

I'll probably stay in college though unless the debt really gets out of hand
