College, University....work..then? *rant*

  1. I'm not sure how many of you are in college or university, I just finished my first year and I'm about to go into my second year. I'm studying psychology, the only thing I could find that really fascinates me.
And I realised something today, firstly I dont terribly enjoy college i'm doing it for the money i'll be able to make one day, no other reason. I'm not doing it for my personal gain, I dont think i'll feel any better at the end of it. I'm doing it so I can get a job...which brings me to my next point..i spend the next 3 years getting a degree, 5 if i get my masters...and then? I work till i retire... its all starting to seem terribly depressing, I'm working my ass off for 4 years to work my ass off for the next 40 years.
Sometimes I wish i could live in a hut, grow my own weed, and do absaloutley nothing but lie on the beach and be stoned..It just makes me so mad that i've yet to come up with a solution to my problem, and this seems the only way to go...
Which brings me to my questions...

Am i the only one who sees things this way?

And who heres in university/college and what are you studying?

thanks for listening to my depressing bitching ;) I'm actually generally a very cheerful person! hehe :D

  2. Why not just live in a hut, grow your own weed, and lie on the beach? With the amount of time and energy being put into getting your masters, you could easily find the means and connections to live out your dreams.

Thats what wrong with most people today. They're absolutely brainwashed that college is the only way to go. Not true. With the same amount of hardwork and dedication (and a lot less money), you could easily move out of the country and do what you want.

What I'm doing and its really not that hard. I have a good year and half left here, and I'm gone. :D

  3. I agree completely, it sucks. As for busting your ass for the next 3 years only to bust your ass for another 45 years, well I've just come to grips with it. Atleast for those 40-45 years you will hopefully be doing a job that you someone enjoy... that's what I found the college degree to be a ticket to. Without the degree your job range is smaller so the chances are much higher that you will end up in a job that makes the next 40-45 years miserable.

I am in college and hate it as well, but I figure it'llbe worth it in the end. My degree is commercial aviation, so once I'm done with all the BS, things should be better. I'm going into the one career I figured will give me emense pleasure. I love to fly, I love being in control of what ever transportation means I'm on, and I LOVE the being in airports, pilot is about the only thing in the world I want to do for a living...

so basically how I look at college is not so much just to make money to survive, but so you can choose a job that you're not burring your head under the pillows as the alarm clock roars... so keep you head up, and good luck. This is about the most opptimistic I have ever been :p

  4. I know exactly how u feel, that's part of the reason why I dropped out. I pretty much majored in partying. It worked out well for me for a while. I just went to college bc it was the thing to do.

  5. True. I'm not saying college is terrible. I just like to study on my own, learn what I want, the take experience and skill into the job world.

Yes, with those types of credentials, you'll only get a "blue collar" job. But, they make a comfortable living. But, I'm not going to a traditional college. Just a culinary school. But, being a chef I can travel anywhere which is mine dream.

Just do what you love doing in life. :D

  6. Well I dunno, I'm actually majoring in Psychology, in my first year of college next week, and I understand where you're coming from but I figure, hell I've done like all these years of schooling [middle school and high] whats 4 more years gonna hurt at a college? The benefits will be worth it in the end...keep your head upright man.

  7. i think most people see it this way because thats the way it really is. its a sad truth....i am going into my 3rd year of a 5 year degree (civil engineering and business) and as you said, the money is the main motivation. the other motivation is that i am headed for a career that interests me....but at this point i am not studying everything that i would like to, since almost all the courses i take are required for my degree, but thats a tradeoff...

my goal is to one day own a business and gain financial freedom.....i want a challenge and try to make a difference....and THEN, the plan is to do absolutely nothing except lie on the beach stoned :p...with no worries and no stress....

be optimistic...if u found something that really interests you then whats to worry about? there are and will be so many opportunities but u just arent seein them right now....its all good...

  8. That's how I thought going in too, but idk things change. College is a good thing for most people, just not for everyone.

  9. I guess its just not for me. I can't really get into uniformed education. I like to learn in different ways than just being lectured and writing. I like to use my hands and delve into what I'm studying.

  10. I completely agree. But, I'm different, it comes naturally for me to go through "the system" however, there are plenty of intelligent people that it doesn't work. And i think there needs to be drastic educational reform. because going through college I've come to a conclusion, No matter what your degree, you're getting a B.S. I don't care if you're taking liberal arts and it says you're getting a B.A of __________ in the college setting, we're all getting a B.S... that is a degree to bullshit. Because all you need to do to pass college is bullshit. It's trully sad. So basically this degree (this part I think I might be copying from some comedy, but I forget, it's trully how i feel) but all the degree says is that you can put up with a high level of bullshit for four or five years and spew even more bullshit to get through. And if people know how to bullshit, they can get through college. Some people, (my guess is you Heinous Anus) see through the bullshit and because of it, don't enjoy the school setting, that doesn't make them any less intelligent, but unfortunately, because of the way society works today, it's difficult for people to get ahead without the degree that says they can put out as much bullshit as they can deal with. So that is awesome you found a chef program that works for you.

But basically every paper i have written in college was just me putting a bunch of bullshit desguised as something intellectual (Most intellects are just bullshit masters) and everytime I get my paper back it almost always (minus one occasion) had an A on it... and i just laugh inside at how I got an A when all I did was basically threw bullshit towards my keyboard and random letters came out...

so, basically, now that I'm on my 'bullshit' soap box, WE NEED SECONDARY EDUCATION REFORM IN TODAY'S SOCIETY!

  11. Exactly, Jonsi. Thats all it is, bullshit. Its like going to highschool classes over again, except paying out of the ass for them.

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Jonsi again."

I mean, yea, there are great programs to study if you really know what you want to do in life. But, like you said...just too much bullshit comes with it. Why pay for extra english lit. classes, etc when its not effecting your Comm. Aviation study? Just doesn't make sense. More of a reason for them to suck the money out of you.

And kids going directly from highschool to college? I never understood that. Why drop $40,000 on an education when you're only 18 and have no idea what you really want to do in life. All that money, to go through, party, learn some extra highschool curriculum, all to change your major and eventually your career? Eh...just not my cup o' tea.

But, for those who actually know what you want, have the motivation, drive, and initiative to sit through all that, God Speed. You've got a bigger set of balls than I do. :D

  12. That's why I'm becoming a dentist. Working 5 days a week sounds fantastic to me.

  13. And don't forget the infamously high suicide rate :p

  14. I came to the same conclusion when I was about 5 years out of school and hating my job.

Here's what I did: I worked on learning some niche skills that not many people have in my field. Now I have a decent paying job and I work, on average, 10-20 hours/week, while getting salary for full time.

It's not the greatest solution, because I'll never get promoted above a certain level: they have to have someone to do this job, and it's hard to find people, so they'll keep me where I'm at. But I'm happy with it because more free time is valuable to me.

That's my approach, anyway, your mileage may vary.

  15. Damn..sounds like quite a few people here hate college. Personally, I love college.. the parties, bars, endless amount of smokin hot girls, good education, football games, basketball games, living away from home. Im a Anthropology/History/ major - Geography minor and am going to be doing either something business related or maritime/underwater archeology. Archeologist's dont make that much money but the work is gratifying, incredible and enjoyable. Might be a Hydrologist too, not sure. Got one year left..its gunna be an insane year! ...possibly grad school after.

As far as retirement.. i only want to work until i have enuf money to comfortably move to the virgin islands into a little house on the beach and grow my own herb, go scuba diving everyday, drink endless amounts of rum, chill on the beach, play my guitar for endless hours, go fishing... all with the company of a beautiful wife and maybe a couple dogs (no kids for me - kids are expensive)..and of course, smoke with the islanders and locals...thats my dream retirement and i plan on achieveing it as long as the cards fall right.

  16. Ahh you guys are the greatest... =) I really do love GC...
I was starting to feel terribly desperate that I was the only one who felt this way..and it scared me reallly but like the saying goes...misery loves company ;)

I dont think I hate college, I enjoy learning new things and all that... what i dont like is the fact that if i dont go to college I'll feel like i havent lived up to my fullest potential which is such bullshit... but thats just how i feel..and if i drop out of college now i will be terribly dissapointed with myself for it.. but it just makes me so mad that human beings havent come up wiith a better way to live yet...

you guys really are the best!

  17. I dont feel that college classes are like high school at all. yea its the same premises of lecture and test etc. But atleast for me its actually challenging, in high school i would just go to class listen and ace the tests. I am going to University of Colorado @ boulder and am majoring in Accounting and Business Admin.

I plan on getting my masters and then going into international business hopefully somewhere in asia.

The reason I chose this path isn't all because i want to be rich and not have to live paycheck to pay check, nice house etc. Its because I always like to learn new things and just overall know a lot. Another reason I chose to go to college is because I could, without going into debt, taking out massive loans and all. i don't want to sound like a spoiled little shit, but my parents said they would support me in whatever I wanted to do. If I wanted to not go to college they would help me get started with a job and a place , and if I wanted to go to college I could go anywhere i pleased and they would pay for it.

Another reason I want to go is because I look at my dad and my uncle, my dad who went to college, became the CEO of a multi-million dollar corporation at the age of 34, and although as a kid it was rough not seeing him, he retired at 39 and has been home everyday.

Then I look at my uncle, who did not go to college and owns his own business and works his hands to the bones everyday, I worked with him this summer and this gave me such a great respect for people that do work like he does. Although college may not be right for everyone, it is the right choice for me. sorry if this is rant-ish, and if you got this far I give you grats!
