College is a scam

  1. Okay guys. I have a theory about America and higher education. In America, you're free to do anything right? You can be born on the streets without a dollar to your name but grow up to be the president, that's the beauty of America, right? No. I think that college is so expensive because it is a way to ensure that the poor stay poor throughout generations and the rich stay rich. I'm sure when the first college was built here that wasn't really the main goal. And it's not true in all cases, look at Alexander Hamilton. But to make a generalization, does that make sense to any of you? Or do I sound like a negative Nancy?

    No. No its not

While a poverty trap seems to exist, americas is the easiest one to escape.

Lets face it. We are still animals and always will be. Survival of the fittest

It is entirely possible for a poor person to get into college. Its about motivation.

Instead of smoking and drinking and hanging with the cool kids, use the public library, get educated. In the age of the internet there is no exscuse.

The information learned in college is extremely valuble and the degree is great for your career.

All this poverty trap shit is a cop out for respinsibility

I have a friend who makes degrees. Nice and authentic looking.

  5. Whatever works.

Life is just a game. Figure it out and win.

Dont hate the players. Hate the game.

Society will never evolve into some sort of communist magical wonderland. There are limited resources and people want freedom to grow.

    Not all men are equal.

Equal opportunity =\\= equal everything else

    Equality is erned

  6. The rate of college tuition inflation proves to me that our current system is a scam.

  7. Ummm, yeah, most states fund colleges that you can go to in order to get degrees to be nurses, civil engineers, electricians, welders, pipe-fitters, carpenters, etc. So you can color me "scammed", I guess, because I believe in education too. You guys are right, we don't need degrees to keep us warm. We need people like industrial contractors, city planners, electricians, and inventors to keep us warm and generally make our lives great, and a good deal of them do need education to do that.

College should be free like it is in Europe.
However... I am piss poor right now but because I am keeping a good GPA my college is being paid for by the government and I do not have to pay it back as long as I graduate. And I will, with multiple degrees.

College is what you make of it. If you go there with the intent to learn and make something of yourself then guess what? That is what will happen. A degree doesn't open the world up to you, it is up to you to open that door for yourself. A degree helps, it makes that door lighter, but what really matters is the skills that you learn in college. And I know people bash on the humanities and sociology classes because they aren't "job friendly," however they are gateways to a higher consciousness and openness to new experiences and viewpoints that you would have otherwise missed out on. Not to mention employers look for open minded individuals who understand the complexities of social interaction inside and outside the workplace.

As an engineering student, I can attest that college is absolutely necessary!!! I do NOT want an unskilled and non-college educated engineer designing a roller coaster, seat belts, safety systems, etc... College may be expensive (and I totally disagree with that) but there are so many ways to get around paying for college that it is just wrong to say that it is not for everybody. All you have to do is apply yourself and make it known that you are going to succeed, scholarships and grants will come those who deserve them!

I just don't think education works as it should. It's been turned into a dogmatic institution that, though having potential to create and expand human understanding to a higher degree, has many limitations. The limitations are a product of the very way our society is structured, the expectations and bureaucracy and politics.

    Too many limitations.

  10.
And the rate of college intuition proves to me how much degrees are in demand, for people to become doctors, industrial plumbers, the automobile engineers who design our means of transportation, and the city and state workers who ensure that we have clean water. We live in a world that requires more and more qualified people. And when you give a service that is in high demand you obviously are going to charge more for it. People come to your institution when you do this, in spite of how much cheaper it could be for them to get similar degrees at state colleges, because of the improved quality of service they get, the prestige that comes along with learning from your highly esteemed professors, professors who are good enough at what they do to work at a private institution.

  11.
Look, as cumbersome and filled with red tape as it is, the education system is very necessary, isn't it?

  12. In Finland you actually get paid to go to college...  I only recently learned that.  I don't like how expensive it is...  I do believe it should be free.  But I'm still going to attend it because it is great to have something to fall back on.

  13. People should be able to get into prestige schools based off ability alone, money should not be a factor. Money comes after college, definitely not before or during. A few lucky people get into top schools because "daddy went there" or because their parents paid their tuition; and a good percentage of them are under qualified. College should be free! At all levels, it should be funded by the government and the idea of a 'for profit' school should be abolished! The welfare of the people is more important than profit in the wrong hands... Sorry, that is some of my socialist instinct coming out. I am not a socialist, i don't label myself, but I do enjoy many socialist principles and hardly any capitalist ones. And my views on education and the workforce strongly reflect this haha.

Supply and demand go out the window when addressing colleges.

Credential inflation- When more and more people have higher education, thereby leveling out the playing field.

It used to be that the cream of the crop went to college, now every parent dreams of their children graduating from a prestigious university.

The harsh truth is that the more people go, the less your degree is worth, and the higher level of competition you now have to compete against  for a entry level position.

Whats more valuable then a piece of paper is what you can bring to the table.

Not every Indian gets to write on the cave walls.

  17. I mean I'm saying some people just can't go to college because of money, not saying I'm not going or trying to get out of responsibility. I also think it's more common to not go to college if your parents didn't. And more common to go if your parents did. Because if your parents did go to college, they are more likely to have more money to help you out with. Also, I'm not saying parents should pay for college if they have the money, but there's always a suggested parent contribution.

  18. yes but sadly these workers are "blue collar" and even though they work the hardest, do not make as much money as someone with a masters

Education is very necessary. The system, which is not based on the highest ideals of education and education alone, is not. The system might seem necessary, but this system is of our own making, a complex structure of boundaries and practices meant to facilitate the ultimate expression of growth and ideals. All our institutions need a makeover. Education, economy, religion, government and media.

All these things have lost focus, and therein lies a chaos that leads quickly towards destruction, and destruction leads to rebirth. Hopefully the birthing pains are few, but that depends on what we do now to garner and expound greater understanding of our goals in creating a system.
