Coconut Oil question

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by Nematode128, Jun 28, 2019.

  1. I've been experimenting with making coconut oil infusions and I noticed that even after squeezing through a cheese cloth, the buds still retaining a lot of the oil so I end up losing a decent amount. I saw on another forum someone mentioned using hot water and putting in the freezer to extract more of the oil. Can anyone elaborate more on that?

  2. Why don't you grind your decarbed weed to powder and don't strain it - that way you lose nothing.

  3. Rinse with 190 proof Everclear. Let sit until oil settles. Decant and save alcohol for next time. Let alcohol evaporate off remaining oil.

  4. You could put the oil soaked material in very hot water and squeeze the oil out into the water. Strain and refrigerate, the coconut oil will congeal on top of the water and can be separated.

  5. Interesting approach, I'll try it out!

  6. So just dip my cheese cloth with my herb into hot water, wring it out and refrigerate?

  7. That's about it. Put your oily weed in boiling water, strain, refrigerate, and separate. Just like taking the oil out when making fat free chicken broth.

  8. Did you use lecithin in your oil? If you did, then don't use water, because lecithin binds the oil with the water, and it will not separate.

  9. I did use lecithin. What would you recommend for getting the oil out?

  10. How much oil can be left? I just made some yesterday with 1/2 cup of oil and I ended up within a fraction of a 1/2 cup of canna oil after squeezing it with a 160 micron screen.

  11. I would add a little more oil to it, warm up and get the amount you need for your recipe if that is the issue. I always add slightly more oil because of the need for specific amounts in recipes. I don't add my lecithin into the oil until after I have strained it (I actually skim my oil off to keep the green silt out) and I tend to save whatever solids are leftover in a large jar in my freezer until I have enough to bother with this washing step.

You can try the method using everclear and evaporating it, since there is very little water in 190 proof. Page 155 and 156 from Sam's long tincture thread explain how to do this. Just ran across it the other day so good timing....

  12. oops sorry @Nematode128 ...Posts #155 and #156 not page 156.

  13. If you used lecithin you can still salvage your oil. Your oil-water sludge will still rise to the top of the rest of the water, after you collect it you can put it in a small pan in a heated oil bath (a double boiler using oil instead of water). When the temp of the sludge gets to the boiling point the water will boil out leaving the oil/lecithin behind. Even if you didn't use lecithin and want to make sure all of the water is out of the separated oil you can use the heated oil bath to remove it. When I make RSO I use a heated oil bath to make sure there isn't any water in the oil and if I didn't decarb earlier, after the water boils out I increase the temp to 240F and decarb the oil.

  14. So the lecithin doesn't need to be added during the infusion?

  15. Would the grind to powder method remove the need to strain if I was infusing butter instead of oil?

  16. The oil used doesn't matter to the grade of grind. We use Coconut oil as it's the fastest to get into your system as it doesn't need any stomach bile to get to the Liver where the Delta-9-THC gets converted to 11-Hydroxy-THC.
Coconut oil is also much more stable then butter is as far as long term room temp storage. Butter goes rancid far faster.

Straining your loosing roughly 25% of the THC that stays trapped in the discarded bud scraps.

I use a crockpot set on low, mix a solution thats 30% coconut oil, 30% almond oil, and 40% olive oil. I place my plant matter and the oil in the crock pot, cover it, and cook on lowest setting for 4-8 hours stirring occasionally. I pour my oil through a filter into a mason jar.

  18. Yep, this is good approach

  19. Hi just wondering can rso and coconut oil just be mixed together in a saucepan on a low heat?

  20. Yes.
Add roughly 1/6th lecithin by oil volume to help promote bioavailability. It gives about double the effects per MG.
