Clonex Clone solution

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by JKill, Apr 19, 2020.

  1. Alright so i'm a big fan of General Hydroponics products but apparently a 1L bottle of Rapid start costs over $200.
So, Clonex solution is on Amazon for $50 for a litre.

I know plenty of people use Clonex and I cant imagine why the vast difference in price?

anyway i'm going to buy a bottle of Clonex and try it out i guess.

anyone tried both and have a preference?

  2. I have never used the rapid start but I can tell you one of the biggest differences in price is that the gh product says use 1 tsp per 5 gal and clone x is 5ml-10ml per gallon. I like clone x alot, I use it for the first week or 2. It's just a good quality nutrient that is light enough for seeds and clones.

  3. I use rooting powder from home depot and rapid rooters. Nothing special.

  4. I've used Clonex for 10 years. I use about 20% of what they recommend..my machine is 60 site..based on volume I think it says 2 and half bottles..I use half a bottle and can get two batches of clones..full bottle gets me about 300 clones.
It's all I use in machine, I do still use the Clonex gel to dip em in before putting on machine.
I have better than 95% rate on machine and usually get 60/60 but have had times when less than 5 just don't make it. Past couple weeks pics. IMG_20200412_234733495.jpg

  5. Awesome, thank you everyone for the responses.

I've order a 1 Litre bottle of it and I'm excited to try it,

I've had a near 99% rate on cloning the last year or so, but the last batch just didn't make it.

Ph steady at 5.8PH, 110PPM light nutrient, I've never had a problem like this and just today tossed 6 clones.

super confused like I said I've had a really great success rate with this method so this is very weird.

    thank you everyone!

  6. I wouldnt recommend jiffy pellets, i pop 3 in em and they did nada.

  7. Ok here's what I know about cloning after doing thousands of them..I know not all spaces are same..but here's what mine like and don't..

I don't have a light above my machine. I don't even pH my water..I fill water use half bottle of Clonex even though they recommend over 2 bottles..I cut, dip, set em on and forget for whole week..I start checking on week 1..usually have start of roots or sign of root..by 10 days roots are few inches and anywhere from there to day 14 I start pulling and putting in dirt.

Again, no light above my machine, ambient light off of a near by t5 is enough.

Once I move em to soil...I again can't have light on em..if I slide them under a t5, they droop instantly...
So I set em soil, put pots where ever they can catch ambient light for 24 hours and then slide em under t5. Obviously every one different and most using LED but I'm still t5 and halides in veg.

I started middle of last week taking clones off machine, and now have machine empty..all were set away from light for first 24-48 hours and had no dropping and all survived.
Today, I pulled em out from the t5 cause I only had few bulbs working, and tossed em under HPS cause I just dropped the halide on the floor.
52 of 60 survived.. oddly enough I cut 50 myself and got 10 cuts to put on machine from friend. All 50 of mine rooted and only 2 of his did, his other 8 rotted away in first week.

  8. I probably should have clarified I'm strictly hydroponics.

Not using rapid rooters or rock wool or jiffy pellets or anything like that either
just using this in either a DWC style cloner or Aeroponic style cloner.

    thanks again everyone.
    :)
    I appreciate the help.

  9. My dwc cloner was too cold last time i tried. How fast they root in yours.

  10. I've always got roots and healthy looking clones in 11 days.

it took almost 16 days to even just see that start of roots, and the clones were all but pretty much dead.

  11. That blows dude. If i keep em under the hps to keep em warm takes like 8 days and then they hit the coco.

  12. @JKill water temp? Do you clean cloner after each round? Was the mother healthy? Humidity? Any change to light or ambient temp from previous successful cloning runs?

  13. Hey! hope your doing well, long time no talk

    1) yes I always give the cloner a good cleaning.

2)the mother is/was a healthy Purple Kush strain

    3) humidity is on the lower end. (like 55%ish) but again I've NEVER had to even worry about humidity at all when doing this method with the bubble cloner.

    4) No change in lighting, I've always just raised the light(cheap blurple) for the mother up as high as it will go in the tent (like 4 plus feet away from the clones/mother) and its always worked great.

--- the only real change from my previous attempts at cloning was the air stone I used was one of the big 2"X4" cylinder, and the air pump was a lot stronger. I don't know if having a larger ayirstone/more powerful air pump could possibly be the reason for whats going on? I don't think thats the problem though...

I tried lowering the water level 6 inches below the stems, to touching the stems, and everything in between, nothing made a difference

I'm going to give it another go as soon as the clonex arrives, and the only thing I can really think to change is to

    1) put the clones in their own tent with NO light or a much weaker light

    2) use a finer air stone? Again I don't really think this is the problem. some of the sprayer cloners I see look like they are just drenching the clones constantly.

    3) raise the humidity

other than that I really don't know what to change.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

  14. Hmm my first thought is water temp. If the pump is one of those big noisy ones it might have raised the water temp. I’ve run a few big air pumps that have gotten pretty warm.

It seems unlikely this would be the case because the heat transfer is very indirect and inefficient so it shouldn’t have raised the temp of the water much if any.

The next thought was the light . But you mentioned you have been successful in the past. So this is also unlikely. Hopefully your next batch go well.
