Clones from Clones? Is a MOM really needed?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by HippieGardner, Mar 2, 2010.

  1. is it possible to keep cutting clones from clones (that would be actually growing) as opposed to a single mom? it seems like it would work but would it jeapordize the growth or potency?

i could keep a mom or two i suppose, but the location i have dedicated for it is a false kitchen base cabinet. it is about 36" in height and im not sure how to keep a mom from outgrowing the cabinet.

any help would be greatly appreciated with a dash of rep, and if you couldnt help i hope you learned something. thanks alot everyone. peace&love

  2. Thats a really good question, hopefully I can answer it for you to the best of my ability.

Having a mother plant gives you consistent clones, meaning exact genetic replicas. Now if the clones were grown from those genetics, wouldn't they have the same genotype? Yes, they would. The only difference is having one plant to provide you as opposed to having 6 clones in veg, and taking a clone or two from each one. Also, when you do it this way, your plants evolve differently, and faster.

Your plants adapt to their environment very rapidly. Evolution for humans takes thousands of years, but plants evolve in minutes. By taking clones from clones, and continuing the process, you are evolving your plant into your home made environment. Whether the result of this is good or bad is indifferent, but can occur either way, ie. less branching, more branching, plants begin to become shorter or taller as time goes on, etc. Either way you are speeding up the process of evolution so to speak. I learned this off of strawberry plants to be honest. It takes years for a seeding to fully mature from a strawberry plant, so I started cloning chutes, very similar to cloning marijuana. By vegging the strawberry plant and taking clones, then fruiting the clone giver consistently. I found that the cloned plants would change. In my case it was for the better and they began to grow on a bed much wider, covering more area.

Both processes work, but knowing the results is impossible without actually doing it. Others might differ in their opinion, but this is just my experience. I hope it is of use to you. Later man

I just set out an extra clone to be my new mother plant, and once my ladies are almost done I take clones off of the old clone I set out to be the new mother. And I continue this as long as I grow that strain. Another thing that might help you when cloning is the clones you take from the bottom of the mother plant are the easiest to root because they have the proper hormones. Later brother:smoke:

P.S. there are othere ways to help the plants root better by scraping the bottom stem free of its outer layer with a razor blade and cutting it down the center at the bottom of the clone stem. Sorry I cant go into wicked detail about these techniques but I am too chubbie right now. Later dude

  5. Yeah, you can cut clones from clones. If you can't even use bonzai moms than this is a great way to go cause you can just keep clonin your hearts content. I think this just a great way to go all together. When I start my vegging room I'll be taking clones and vegging than taking clones from the vegging plants andd killing the veged plants and keep recycling untill they are ready to be flowered.
