Im thinking about growing a clone, but i have no clue what i'm doing. so i made this (short) list of questions: 1. Do clones have roots? if so do you water them from the leaves or the roots? 2. Do you need to change the light settings or bulbs for clones? 3. Do clones need nutrients, if so what kind? 4. How often should you water them? 5. How big is the average clone when you first get it? THANK YOU!
1) Yes clones have roots. You water the soil. You can spray the leaves but use RO water. 2) You want 100watts of actual Watts of CFLs for the first plant and 50watts for each additional plant. You want 6500 for veg, and 1750 for flowering. 3) Clones do need nutrients. I like Fox Farm but there are plenty of different ones depending on your budget. 4) You water when they need it. There are two easy ways to check. Stick your finger in to your second nuckle and if its dry, water her. You can also lift the pot. Feel how heavy the pot is when you first put soil in and then again after you water. You can feel how much heavier the pot is wet compared to dry. When it feels light, water her. Don't use tap water! 5) Depending on how old the clone is and where you get it from. Clones are usually only about 7-8 inches tall with just a couple leaves. After just a week or so, she'll have new branches.
Thank you so much. One more question about the watering: If I'm not supposed to use tap water than what am i supposed to use?
You can use tap water just fine, just PH the water. If its high you can use PH up or Down. Just let the tap water sit out for 48 hours, i use 5 gallon jugs now. I use tap - let it sit for 48 hours, then add nutes, i then let it sit another 24 hours, PH and usually i do not need to adjust anymore (i've come a long way in a few weeks) Actually, let me clarify on the whole Tap water thing, I'm used to wells.. I do not live in the city and i typically never do. That said my water is from an actual underground spring and not contaminated with chlorine. Some city water is ok from my understanding, but some areas are really really bad, they have ultra chlorinated water ive been to a few places where you do not drink the water, you buy jugs of it because you could taste the chlorine - I would probably not ever feed that crap to my plants, even if i let it sit out for 7 days. If your water is bad, you can use distilled.. but that gets expensive.
I would say its safe to bet that LA water is pretty bad and would need to sit out for 7 days before being used at least (IMO) I have no idea though. Again, I just use natural spring water from a well, for nutes i'm using Technaflora and GH. I'm not a nutes expert tho so somebody else would probably be better suited to help you there, i just feed them what seems to work.
I bought a clone that was in a little dirt ball and just planted it in potting soil, watered it with tap water like all the others I grew from seed and it did great. Later when I had to pull a male I kinda panicked and bought two more clones but they were in this white cotton like fiber cube and when I put them in the dirt they just died. I wounder why? Any help would be great!
MG potting mix same as the other that did well. Now that I think of it I didn't use that I used top soil I got at OSH and used MG shake and feed on the first one.
How did they react? Did they die right away? Did they brown first? Were they droopy? Did you feed them? Water them?
Im also cloning and i found out the hard way that if u dont have a cloning 'machine' u need to spend a lot of time taking care of ur clones because they can die in matter of hours. Like mine, if u look at my grow u will see what i mean.
It balances the PH out without me having to add anything. The longer tap sits out the safer it will be and any potential chemicals can/will break down. I believe the standard to let tap water sit out is 7 days, 48 hours + one day after mix is not that bad, does not hurt my nutes at all. Not a hyrdo setup so i can get away with it. There is no real reason or logic behind me doing it, its just "something i do" Also if i'm feeding something with a high carbo load/sugar content - I wont let it sit, sugars will ferment really fast/
My first one in the dirt ball did great, the two I got that were in the fiber cubes, drooped as soon as I put them in dirt. I watered them the same way as the dirtball one and fed them the same as the one that did well but they both drooped imediatly and then got crispy, brown and died. Never even grew a centimeter, all outdoors, I'm just puzzled at the big difference, when I treated them all the same. #1 does great, #2 & 3 just wilted and died. I don't get it. Oh well, just gotta hope the two from seed that I've got left don't turn out to be "naughty boys". If they do all I have left is the #1 clone.
Well yea, i've seen people take cuttings put them in root riots and then just stick them under 1000 watt mh lol.. I literally only use a single florescent tube and a cfl light. Root riots are great if you do not have a cloning machine. The medium stays moist but not enough to sufficate roots, you WILL always have roots within 7 days with root riots. I've been cloning northern lights the past two weeks, girl is notoriously hard to clone (this particular mother i dunno about the strain) before we were not getting to them to take in rock wool or jiffy pucks, but root riots.. i dunno seem to work great. never ever stick your brand new cuttings under intense heat, and make sure they get misted 2-3 times a day or stuck in a humidity dome - that is if you do not have a cloner. For $40 tho u can build a nice cloning machine. Need I'm curious, how tall were they when you transplanted? If they were just cuttings and not full on clones with an established root system, putting cuttings into soil will just kill them usually. I cant say I've ever put something into soil until it was fully rooted and looked like the following.. This is my after rooted setup, i do not want big growth as i'm not ready to veg these and i have no real veg room for fresh rooted clones setup so they just sit on my dresser..its kinda funny one $10 florescent keeps these perfectly happy for now.. yea hella ghetto but it works.. btw i do not reccomend using the soda cans i used.. i ran out of cups i normally never use cans unless im in a bind. This week I'm in a bind, building a proper box for all the small guys finally, besides these i have a few more sitting in my humidity dome. Why dont i have them in a veg room? 1 room under the 1k MH is infested with spider mites right now, fogged 3 times now going to do it again in 3 more days then move new cuttings in. - I also do not put any plants under the MH until they are 5-6 inches, dunno, just me. This again is a temp setup but its kept every cutting i've taken alive and helps with roots, not too hot MH and even too many CFL's will destroy the smaller guys - Will build a proper box for veg soon, my actual cloning dome usually sits where this flouro is, this flouro has worked perfect for my cloning needs btw. And again, everything in the cans/bottles are all 100% rooted - I just transplanted them 2 days ago and will let them go until i see the first root appear in one of the mtn dew bottles, then I'll transplant into 1 gallons.
I use a couple 27watts to give them some light. I just took some clones a few days ago and they are all doing very well. I'll be adding a couple more CFLs once I see some growth and think they need more. I like to keep my light wattage low for first week to take it easy on the clones
