Someone told me that a guy from roots organic said to use our local clay soil with perlite instead of buying soil. Now I don't know why an employee of a soil company would say this but I've been looking around and apparently it has a lot of nutrients. Seriously what would work better amending clay with a ton of perlite and lime or using some bagged dirt. The cost savings would be insane but I don't want to lose out on a good year because I used clay.
That's bs. Clay contains no humus at all. Also, it's full of minerals, not so much nutrients. Perhaps incorporate some into the mix... not too much because it usually dries like concrete
Yes exactly like concrete. Clay is bad news for most plants, and I garauntee you will be dissapointed if they even live. Do yourself a big favor buy some peat topsoil perlite cimpost and manure, still cheap plus its super soil. Make sure to give soil at keast 1 mo. to cook
if you plant in clay like i do dig a huge grave wide and deep.. so deep you hit the watertable where water rises into your dig.. thats ur drain.. refill with ammended bagsoil.. basically you are just digging a container underground and filling it with other than native soil..
