Christianity - Good or Evil? A Poll.

Discussion in 'Religion, Beliefs and Spirituality' started by MelT, Jan 10, 2008.

  1. This poll is not judging christians, but christianity and its actions over the last 2,000 years. Christianity in theory is one thing, actual performance is another.

  2. Melt, is this poll about christianity being bad for society? or in history?

  3. I'd say that as of late, its been relatively OK. It still causes a lot of shit, but these have been no dark ages. Go back more than a hundred or so years, though, and things start becoming more and more ridiculous. On a whole, its caused a lot more harm than its ever done good.

  4. Evil Bible

Christianity has been evil throughout history, people have killed more people in the name of god's love than anything else, and this has mostly been done through christianity. It still kills people today, but mostly on an intellectual level. We still have christians who will blow up abortion clinics and kill abortion doctors and judges. Do also remember that Hitler was a christian.

Any belief that goes to africa and says "if you want food you must worship our god" is nothing short of dispicable. What may be worse is today the church says "AIDS is bad but condoms are worse". Not supplying birth control and STD protecttion is a crime and is done by evil people. Also, teaching lies such as creationism in schol is obsurd and should be treated as such.

Christianity stops the progression of science and is holding the western world back from possible discoveries that can save lives. That, my friends, is evil.

And if christians base their morals and actions after there "god", what do we say to this?

Not including the floods and slaughters where no actual numbers were written in the bible. This also doesnt count for every person who has ever died because god didnt care enough.

"With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion." ~Steven Weinberg

  5. I think to some extent both. Its persecutions in the past, and its involvment in science, politics, medicine and education today. It's use as a political pawn too, sending soldiers out to fight 'for god and country' as a ploy. How good or bad overall it's been for society, and how good it has been historically at what it claims to be.

  6. I agree. Even in modern times, in Ireland, the sectarian killings (protestant vs catholic) are only just stopping after some 80-odd years. Hundreds dead, tortured, or maimed. Complete innocents blown up, because they had the wrong god.

How can it be a religion of peace?

    Good find BTW Galen:)

This is later: I'm surprised at the results so far, I thought christianity would do better than that. Nobody, not even the religious, think it's a 'very good' thing? That's pretty damning.

  7. In my opinion Christianity can become a religion of death, or a religion of life. It all depends on whether you follow the views of Paul or Jesus.

However, since there is a double standard I voted Christianity to be evil...

Aperently in christianity they are saved by the death of a perfect being. As far as I know, killing something beautiful has never brought anybody or anything peace.

EDIT: A friend of mine seems to have lost himself to the doctrine, which is preached by the christian church, of being 'poor in spirit' or meek of spirit. The guy seems like he's walking around completely fried in the head; but he is the perfect Christian, because he doesn't speak down about anybody, and he listens to authority very well. Unfortunately he's also a tape recorder, everything said in front of him, is repeated in front of his dad (who is a leader in the church).

just had to put this in here :)

  9. I say the church is neither evil nor good. You cannot blame a religion for it power hungry souls that ran it. You must look at what the religion is saying. What Christianity says is rather wise. Most of the 10 commandments are great rules to live by. But the Bible has been misinterpreteted and misrepresented in my view by men of power. If God really is the loving and compassionate God the bible says him to be a lot of the wars and such would not be his decision but that of men.

So all in all Christianity is good if you follow the basics and it is evil if you follow it word for word. They cancel each other out making it neither good nor evil.

I hope you understand what I'm trying to say here.

  10. Rhythm of Life: The new testament promotes a double standard, and contradicts itself.

Paul states that all of creation will be judged by his gospel and not the gospel of Jesus "16In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel."

Paul goes on and on and on about about how evil people are. He can hardly stop. It's like a guilt trip that keeps going. Actually Paul calls Jesus in Colossians 1:18 "the firstborn from among the dead."

Wait a second. What? The firstborn among the dead? What does that mean? Wouldn't you think that the son of Satan would be the firstborn from among the dead?

In revelations the setiment is again stated, "Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth."

Again, at this point this cannot be the original writing, and must have been altered afterwards, likely by Paul. Because if Jesus is the ruler of the kings of the earth, would they not have come with their armies to his trial? Would now the kings of the earth have destroyed Jesus's enemies?

Think about it, with one hand the church says that they are worshiping Jesus, first born of God from love and eternal life, and on the other hand he is firstborn of the dead, ruler of the kings of earth.

    Somethings wrong here.

  11. True it says that which might be the more evil part of it. The good part is the Thou shalt not kill etc. So in that way I think it is neither good nor evil but it cancels itself out.

  12. Evil, I tell you! EVIL!

  13. it's idiotic to assume any ideal is naturally "evil" "good' or anything in between. Every iota of responsibility lies in the hands of us, the persons performing the acts. People will continue to put any meaning they desire to all religions, deal with it.

For every person killing in the name of God, there's one saving in the name of God. It's not as simple as everyone makes it out to be, nothing is.

And I would also confidently assume that countless more lives have been taken due to empires expanding. Cash and power kills far more. Just look at the Mongol's, they were a secular state who were shamanistic privately.

  14. We know something can be evil by what the doctrine preaches.
    Clicky

Just because this has some truth does not dismiss the fact that the doctrine condones it. I doubt that every person who has killed in the name of religion has done so because of their personal beliefs before coming in contact with the religion. I dont buy it.

I truly beg to differ. Statistics and history show otherwise, my friend.

    • The Crusades.
    • The Inquisition.
    • Witch trials in Europe and America.
    • The Divine right of Kings (valid until killed by another Divinely-appointed King).
    • Missionaries destroying/converting smaller, "heathen" religions and cultures.
    • Missionaries
    • The demonization of other religions, e.g. Christianity demonizing Pagans ("They're devil-worshippers!"), the Romans demonizing Christians ("They're atheists and cannibals!").
    • Persecution of Heretics
    • Children dying because their parents refused them medical treatment on religious grounds; relying instead on faith-healers and prayer.
    • Slavery, supposedly supported by scripture ("Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, just as you would obey Christ.", St.Paul, Ephesians 6:5)
    • Holy wars - followers of different faiths (or even the same faith) killing each other in the name of their (benevolent, loving and merciful) gods.
    • The destruction of great works of art considered to be pornographic/blasphemous, and the persecution of the artists.
    • Censorship (often destructive) of speech, art, books, music, films, poetry, songs and, if possible, thought.
    • Persecution/punishment of blasphemers (Salman Rushdie still has a death sentence on him), and blasphemy laws in general.
    • The requirement of theism in order to stand for public office or to testify in court.
    • Serial killers believing they are doing the work of Satan (or sometimes Jesus).
    • Often-fatal exorcisms by priests believing they are destroying the work of Satan.
    • People suffering dreadful injury or death in the belief that their faith has made them invulnerable (e.g. people climbing into lion enclosures at zoos, with a Bible as protection).
    • Whole societies divided by minor differences in belief or doctrine, often resulting in violence.
    • Mass suicides of cult-members following a charismatic leader who believes the world is about to End (most recently, the Heaven's Gate and Solar Temple cults - there will be more as we approach the year 2000).
    • The attempted genocide of followers of a particular faith (e.g. the Jewish Holocaust, "ethnic cleansing" in former Yugoslavia).
    • Blood sacrifices to appease the Gods, or to ensure a good harvest.
    • The practice of "female circumcision" (more accurately termed genital mutilation).
    • The discouragement of rational, critical thought (resulting in young-earth creationists, for example).
    • Uncontrolled population growth caused (or at least helped) by churches prohibiting birth-control and abortion. (You can also add : unwanted pregnancies, ill-fated forced marriages, and pregnant teenagers condemned to a life in mental institutions to avoid embarrassing their families.)
    • The spread of sexually transmitted diseases (e.g. AIDS) due to churches prohibiting the use of condoms.
    • Believers whipping, impaling, poisoning or crucifying themselves during religious festivals as a demonstration of their faith and piety.
    • Suicide bombers taught to believe that martyrs go straight to Paradise.
    • The indoctrination of children into the religion of their parents, giving them an arbitrary, life-long belief that is almost entirely dependent on their place of birth.
    • Women treated as second-class citizens or even slaves
    • Pentecostal snake-handlers
    • Persecution of homosexuals (genocide of gay and lesbian youth)
    • Abuse of power, authority and trust by religious leaders (for financial gain or sexual abuse of followers and even children).
    • Minor religions ("cults") stockpiling weapons to defend themselves from the Armies Of Satan (i.e. the police and the government).
    to name a few

  15. lol, for a self proclaimed enlightened one, you sure are pimping the samsara with the title of this thread. :D

  16. "Good" and "Evil" are okay terms when fully DEFINED, right? Or not?

  17. i dont accept the concept of evil. certainly at least as a sate of being or a motivation.

that which i see so many decry as evil, i see as simply lacking in sufficient information to make a better choice.

  18. Self proclaimed enlightened individuals... I get a good lol.
If the OP states he is enlightened and made this thread and supporting that Christianity is "evil".. I see a flaw.
But that's what I have seen.

  19. LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! +Rep dude funny shit.

  20. Looking at the original points of Christianity preached by Jesus of Nazareth, that is social justice, peace, altruism, and many others, Christianity is admirable. But what has been done in the name and supposed understanding of Christianity has been undeniably bad for the posterity of humanity. Perhaps we all would have been better off, if everyone just viewed Jesus as a man who had some great ideas about how we should all live our lives, and not praise him as the saviour of all humanity and the son of god.
