Chirstmas Card 2007

Discussion in 'The Artist's Corner' started by Palmer Eldritch, Dec 18, 2007.

  1. well, I'm starting sorta late. I've been in a funk and haven't wanted to work on the things I need to get done. Its got to be this goddamn constant overcast in Washington. I need my vitamin D dammit!

so I had a rough sketch from a week ago that I redrew on some good paper and then inked it. Now I'm about to color it in photoshop. Most of my family and friends will get that version, but I'm trying to decide if I want to give the original (that will be colored with markers) to my parents or my aunt who is my family's previous generation resident artist.

I'm planning on making it available in full resolution once I'm done (which should be tomorrow) if any of you want to use it.

    heres the inked stage:

  2. That's really nice, dude. I like it and I'm rather picky when it comes to Christmas cards. :)

    .

  3. *sigh*

everytime you post something you drew, it brings out so much envy from me. I wish I could draw, but I just have no talent in that area

I think the original copy would be more special because it was done by your actual hand instead of on a computer, but that is just my $0.02 :smoke:

  4. Thanks RMJL! I'm really picky too, it'd be even more secular but there are a few people on my list this year who will like the star and church included

No need for envy Tokin, there are many things in life I suck at because of how much time I spent drawing. I don't even want to mention the last time I had a girlfriend :p and absolutely it would be nicer to have all hand colored cards, but there are two reasons why I won't be making cards for each individual. I don't have enough money to print them properly for one and the other is that I need to be assured that I can get these done on time. If I make a mistake on the marker colored original or if a marker ran out in the middle, I'd have to start over. I know I'll get the results I want using PS.

  5. Sounds like you already made up your mind then :p

  6. Jesus, I could never draw an animal that looks so realistic!

You do some excellent work sir! :hello:

  7. thanks Jolly :)

got the colors blocked in. time to take a break.

  8. color's cleaned up now. Last step is to add shadows and highlights
I'm not happy with the fur though. that might get a revision

actually it'll work just fine . I did fuck up by saving it at the web output resolution so I'll have to fix that now...

  9. Looks awesome with colors too!

Have you tried just a black and grey shade as well? I think that would look super spiffy :D

  10. thats so cute. homemade cards are really sweet to get. =]

  11. great job. only problem i have is with the star...is it producing the light that casts the shadows? and if so why does the sky reflect something different? or is it just a star that's really close?

idk i was trying find something to possibly change and this is the closest thing...once again very nice.

  12. Ever heard of John Ruskin? He taught drawing to the working classes, and .. well theres a quote lemmi find where I've written it down...

"I believe sight is a more important thing than drawing; and I would rather teach drawing that my pupils learn to love nature than to teach the looking at nature that they may learn to draw"

You should just try TokinBlue. Next time you're smoking and its a nice day, go outside with a pad and a pencil and find a spot to sit down and just spend 10-15 minutes drawing something. Its such a great feeling, one that doesn't come from your skills as an 'artist' but rather from the appreciation of nature.

Sorry for shooting off on a tangent! Palmer, its a lovely idea for a card

  13. thanks guys. yeah theres a ton of things wrong with the image. The shadows don't make sense as you point out pief, I was going for mood and atmosphere more than being technically correct. I wanted the star to have a tangible affect on the subjects so I exaggerated it quite a bit. Jolly, my first choice would have been to keep this black and white. I wanted to engrave the image but the studio wasn't open, and it just didn't seem right to keep it black and white if I was going to finish it in photoshop.

all in all, people seemed to like it. it got me through another damn christmas

  14. Palmer that looks amazing Im sure your family loves it.
