I had this huge bulb and reflector on my setup, but couldn't really get it close to the plants since the plant would grow towards it. I drilled some holes in the reflector and zip tied some chicken wire around it, now the mesh is about 2+ inches from the bulb, the plants are happier with the light so close but not burning the leaves. I am sure 2,000 people did this already, but just in case........ Cheers!
