Cheap DIY co2

Discussion in 'Advanced Growing Techniques' started by LOTE, Jan 21, 2007.

  1. I am the sort that loves tinkering and building things, and when it comes to co2 it is no exception. I read on other sites that it is possible to rig a 20oz co2 tank that you can buy at a paintball store, with some sort of a valve, and a servo you can get at a hobby store, if all this is placed on a timer it seems to me that you could have a cheap and worthy system for a small cab grow. I am wondering if anyone has a link to a tutorial on this, or has done it, and if so, how?

    Thanks all.:smoking:

  2. You can buy and fill your tanks at welding supply stores. I fill my 20 pound tank for $12. If you buy the real nice aluminum tank from paintball supply you wont want to do a tank exchange for an old beat up steel one. I do exchange with the beat up ones from a hairy guy named Burt (of Burts welding supply). I told them I use it for scuba because it cost less then compressed air.:D

  3. Personaly I would tell people that you have a beer-on-tap set up.. LOL yours is way funnier, but bound to catch someones attention sometime ;)

  4. Thats cool.

What about a DIY one on a smaller scale, with the servo from a hobby store. anyone seen this before?

  5. if you have an idea. go for it and post your results! make sure you get a pressure regulator so your not putting out 10,000 PSI on that little servo

  6. OMFG! Thats fucking funny!

  7. Cheap co2, 2 litre coke bottle-mix 3 cups hot water with 2 cups of sugar, 1 tea spoon of baking powder, 5 table spoons of quiick rising baking yeast. mix it all together and poke a pin sized hole in the lid and your done! be sure to place above plants becuase co2 is heavier than air. this mix last about 2 weeks if after about 8 days you add about a cup of water and give it a skake. In your cabinet case i would run 1/2 inner diameter tubing all along the roof of the box and have the bottle outside of it. the first night you mix dont put it in your grow, mine always foams up and leaves a sticky ring wherever the bottle was. I read this recipe on here and tried it and noticed crazy growth in my rootting clones and already rooted plants.

  8. I have been wondering this too. Actually i was going to do a new post about this. I play paintball all the time and so i pretty much get co2 for free. This would be nice since i have a co2 tank just laying around. im not sure how the hook up would work with a servo though? I know all about the adapters and co2 hook ups but not with a servo or anything.

    up this anybody seen this???

  9. rumple posted a really good reply to this question elsewhere, just get a valve and sticka balloon over it, crack the valve so that it takes like 15 min to fill the balloon (or maybe it was longer) thats your valve setting,

he also said that if you have a valve falure, it doesnt matter, he did and there wasn't any damage.

anyway, search his posts for more exact #'s ;)

  10. I doubt you will get any place with a servo of any type. What you will need to controll your tanks electronicly is a high pressure electric solenoid valve. They come with all CO2 controllers. Most will come hooked to a bubble counter and tank regulator/gage. I looked into building one by dissecting the unit I have and ordering the parts one at a time. Was not worth the trouble. You can find them for $75 on ebay and discount hydro/aquarium supply stores.

Or go low tech like the post my friend mordgrow is referring to. Here is some information from that post:

  11. dry ice - great source of slow release co2 ;)

  12. The only thing about that story is you cant use co2 for diving..Not like that..You would use something called a rebreather..Not a tank.So if you go to somewhere to refill your tank dont use that story..Say you weld things..That way you wont get caught out by the guys at the store..You all wont get served by the dim guy at Burts.. ;)

  13. or tell them you have beer on tap :) thats my line!

  14. Would the inside components as in regulator and lines and stuff from a kegerator work as a diy co2 injection sysytem????

  15. PurpleStuff, Thank you!!!!!!!! thats just what i was looking for.

  16. Anytime Playa!

  17. I know this thread is old. But I still wanna know about the Dry Ice Idea. Any chemists here on GrassCity??

  18. pretty sure if you just put some dry ice in a 2 litre bottle with some warm water youll have co2 build up inside the bottle. only bad thing is is that the pressure would build up and explode. just like a dry ice bomb. which is essentially what your making.

  19. what if you put a hole in the lid, and put a straw or something out the top?
