Change alcohol to glycerin tincture?

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by Chechocolate, May 30, 2019.

  1. Hello everyone,

I followed the steps to make a cold extraction tincture and the results are great, thank you!

Now to get to the icing of the cake, I wondered if I could change the alcohol to vegetable glycerin, so I can really minimize any unwanted side effects and substances.

My approach would be to let the alcohol (190 proof) evaporate until I´m left with the pure THC remains and then just pour the glycerin on it and stir it until it has distributed equally in the substance.

I´m not a chemist though, so I wonder if there might be a problem with the solubility of the sticky THC stuff and the glycerin.. like.. might there be problems e.g. that it will separate when standing around or anything similar? Or might it even stick to the glass jar so much, that I can not even solve it in glycerin, once it has left the first "container liquid"?

I would appreciate a helping hand and of course will tell you the results later :)

  2. Hello and welcome to GC.
I just started dabbling in tinctures and have made the everclear tincture already. Wasn't really a fan so the next time I will be attempting the PG/VG method.
What I've been reading is that you can extract it straight into the PG/VG without even using the alcohol.

To answer your question though. I have seen people double boil the alcohol tincture all the way down to a sticky maple syrup consistency and then add VG and PG. So yes it's possible.

  4. Alcohol, Oil and Glycerin are the 3 most common solvents for Cannabis with Glycerin being the very worst of the 3.

Glycerin takes a good 3 months to do a full extraction of herb at room temp. It won't blend from the reduced state worth a damn either. You can mix the Tincture straight into the VG and use it like that to cut the Alcohol burn.

Some of my adventures with Tincture to VG to RSO here.

If you do full reduction mix the resulting tar with a bit of Coconut oil and a dash of lecithin for a RSO style edible oil.

  5. Do you think glycerin is healthier for you than alcohol? If you try a glycerin based tincture you need to take a hit of plain glycerin first, you may like the alcohol more.

  6. Dang, man, this sucks... "It won't blend from the reduced state worth a damn either." I thought I would be smart and do an effective alcohol extraction to get a nice gooy reduction and add in some VG to make it more palatable. My reduction was 8g and I added the VG. I only add 60 ml of VG, so I still have room to add an emulsifier and still pull a good concentrate. I'm stuck with a separated mix, and I don't know how to emulsify the two. Would some vodka remedy my situation? Suggestions?

I'd hit it with he mini blender and choke it down as it. Most anything you try is likely to make things worse. Call it a fail and....... LOL

I had enough of glycerin messing with making vape juice. We wound up vaping straight 190 proof tincture and threw the glycerin away.

I stick to Alcohol or direct oil extractions and never have a fail.
