as close as possible without burning it... usually something between 1-3 inches for CFLs. if you got a fan blowing rigth at it, it can even touch the plant.
Read through Kamal's guide...thanks for the info. How close would you want a fan to your plants? I'm using a garage cabinet to grow in and don't have a ton of floor space.
have the fan blow just over the tops of the plants so that the leaves are moving a little bit all the time.
