CFL Confusion

  1. Q: I've been told that when using CFLs that you must pay attention to the actual watts used and not equiv. OK got it. And ive been told about you need about 50-100w for each plant(correct me if wrong please). Ok got it. So if I'm growing one plant and am using 1 32w CFL(120w Equiv), is that enough to suffice any growing stage?

Grow space: Approx, 3x3 feet area x 6 feet height.

I've grown before but never indoors. Please help.:smoke:

  2. you are correct. 32 watts is not enough to even veg a plant properly. I would add 1 more bulbs to veg a single plant and 2 more after that to flower.

how many plants are you attempting to grow in that space? then i can tell you how much light you need.

  3. Well i was hoping to start a couple, say like 5 or so to tell sex. But to id like to finish at least to. CFLs and tube(like cheap open channels pref) are what i was aiming for.

But like i said before i've never even thought about doing an indoor grow untill two weeks ago when i cleaned out my closet, set it up and now igot three seeds germed and planted with on 32w cfl.

I have the temp between 70-80, flat white walls and plenty of electrical outlets and etc. I just needs help with lights.

  4. u need 100 actual watts per square foot but a little more doesnt hurt.

  5. I have my seedlings under 2x 24watt 6500k daylight CFL's and a fluro(shorter one) with 2x 18w GroLux tubes(makes a purple color :D)

Things are well, its day 10, going to add a few more today though- as they are starting to pick up

If they stretch - they need more light, or the light closer(2-4inches away from the plant- use hand on top of plant(carefully!) and see if it causes any irritation to your hand)

  6. With CFLs you need a minimum of 100w per plant (though bulbs can do double-duty depending on how they are arranged). And you need to keep them within a couple of inches of the plant.

You also need to be concerned with color spectrum -- you want 6500k for vegging and 6500k for flowering.

  7. whoops toasty had a typo - he ment 2700k for flower

  8. my girl is growing super fast and very healthy i have 10 26 watt cfl on one plant. if i had 5 plants i would not even attempt cfl lol butgl to ya

  9. True, good catch.
