CFL - Anyone ever have a faulty one?

  1. Cliff note version: New CFLs, and fear of faulty wiring/etc. Anyone ever have their CFL fail on them in a dangerous manner?

My two CFLs (95w & 105w) arrived today and they are bigger than I expected, so the way I had intended for them to be placed in my cab isn't going to happen unless I gut my dresser and use that instead. Right now I've got them hanging by their cords from the top of my trunk and I'm a bit nervous about them...

They put out more heat than I had expected them to... Not too much heat, but they do get very hot to the touch. Also, they are a new electrical item to me and I am afraid of them causing a fire in some fashion (faulty manufacture, etc).

I've got the door open and a 8" fan blowing into the trunk and a small (about 3-4") PC fan blowing across the plants. Nothing inside the trunk is hot (barely warm), so I am not so much worried about overheating, but rather the equipment failing in some fashion. Has anyone ever experienced problems (aside from blown-out) with their CFL?

I bought mine from BetterGrow Hydro and Plant'It Earth... Not sure if they've got a reputation for good products. The 95w one is apparently made by HydroFarm.

I'd appreciate it if you guys could set me at ease here... Tell me these things aren't going to short or start a fire because of quality. I'm about to hit the sack and I hope I don't wake up extra crispy.... No fire extinguisher with me at the moment, so I'll just keep a bucket of water in here and hope to remember to flip the off switch before tossing, lol.

One more thing, the white fan in the picture will be left on all night too, for the first time. It doesn't seem to be warming up any so it should be fine, I hope.

Here is a pic of the setup for the night...
