case fans + carbon filter?

Discussion in 'Micro Grows' started by nonsensei, Sep 7, 2012.

  1. I'm planning on growing 2 plants in a 39"L x 15"W x 26.5"H box. It needs to be both odor and noise proof, which is why I'm opting to go with 2x 120mm case fans (one to be used as exhaust, the other to blow air directly on the plants). What's the minimum CFM recommended to move the air efficiently in my relatively small box? Are case fans powerful enough to work in tandem with a carbon filter? (this is key). If not, are duct fans my only other option? Anyone care to comment on the noise levels of duct fans? Again, I'm looking for the noiseless and odorless build possible.

    Thanks.

  2. A carbon filter will work with your pc exhaust fan. just make sure to not make the filter to restrictive. Look at some how to's and DIY on carbon filters. some are with pc fans.

80 cfm is a recommended minimum, but i've seen people use 60

Those case fans hate being held.back

  4. I bought one and had a carbon filter made up and then I forgot I hadn't taped the exposed wires connecting it to a 12v plug. The positive and ground ended up touching. Fried the motor

Thank goodness it was only 10 bucks. Off to buy another one tomorrow

Didn't you use them in your grow, bear? If not what did you use. I've read your grows over again and I don't remember you mentioning fans

  5. well thats not something i wanted to hear. if im growing in a box in my parents basement. i don't want the smell to seep out ever. I want to get a filter setup now and know that it is going to be good

how do you make it less restrictive. to make it affective. it needs to pull through all the carbon.

can someone link me to a good setup with a computer filter and carbon filter. on a low budget here

  6. care to comment on the noise level of those fans?

I'm willing to use any fan so long as it's quiet.

  7. what do you guys think of using an odor block such as this one instead of a filter for my relatively small box?

  8. Check out what I'm using bro

can you just say what you are using . Im looking at your grow and i see you used two pc fans, some duct work and a filter. but you don't mention how you made it or what it is

EDIT: Ok i see you meantioned Zen filters?

would like to know more also. how's the airflow? should I be placing my filter on the inside or the outside? size/model of case fans?

Google DIY Walmart zen filters I found the pencil holders at OfficeMax cheapest I could find them, My fans I use 120mm bgears fans rated at 103 cfm bought from fry's electronics, I glued the fans to my cab and on the inside I got a 4" flange well I used a 4" pvc drain cap ( homesepot has te flanges that are better )and cut out the center and glued it on the dryer hose fit perfect over the 4" flange and the filter was easily taped to the hose the filter fits the hose perfect, I replace the activated carbon every three months it cost me 8$ from Walmart for the carbon and the panty hose

  12. thanks bad. how much noise do those fans produce? do you have a fan controller? is 100+ CFM required to move enough air? sorry for all these questions but I do want to get it right the first time.

  13. They are a little noisy sounds like an Xbox fan turned on, I don't have a fan controller but you could easily hook one up and I wouldn't go under a 100cfm if pulling trough that filter

  14. do I really need that much cfm for a box that's less than 9 cubic feet?

Pullin through the filter will prolly pull it down to 70 cfm or so

  16. Also want to think about heat. more cfm you fan pulls the cooler the box will be. and to my understanding a cooler box, pulling in nice cool air makes for denser buds? all a + have you thought about stacking fans? i have seen it done.

also $30 160cfm "booster" fan works well ONLY with a fan intake. boosters are made to boost obvisouly, they work great with a positve intake box, the booster fan will feed off of it.

  17. Well stacking fans really won't do anything I researched it, these fans I'm talkin about are 11$ I could do a whole fan, hose, and filter for that 30$

  18. ah, that's a shame. seemed like an interesting idea.

my only issue with 100+ CFM fans is noise. I am doing a stealth grow and sound proofing is a priority. Ideally I want something that will provide proper ventilation while maintaining noise control.

Well what is your ambient room temp?
Is noise an issue at night? Let's say from 8 pm - 8am
    Exact size of your box?
How much money you can spend
