Career hunting...

  1. This is kinda off subject, but I figured some of you mj enthousists would have some input.

I've been trying to find something I'd enjoy doing for months and months with no success. I took a class on it in college (when I was going to get generals out of the way). I joined the military cause I felt I was going no where...which was a huge mistake, and I'll be getting out in a few weeks. It was a great experiance though.

Anyways I narrowed it down to political science (or sociology, which I really think is interesting, but would take a masters or phd to get where I want, and the field is very small), network administration (which I'm not sure I'd enjoy, but I'd do it for the 60k and the massive job market), sound engineer (I love music, and think that learning how to work all the recording equipment would be sweet, but they dont make very much and the field isn't very big), and lastly I thought I'd give glass blowing a go...but I'm pretty sure they don't make shit....could be wrong, but I just went to a glass blowing shop and talked to some artists, and they all kinda seem like....poor hippies. It was sweet though, they let me fuck around with molten glass and shap it and shit. The apprenticeship is 18 months long and only cost 1800 bucks, so thats cool.

Do any of you guys work in these fields, or know people who do. Any help would be great.

  2. Hmm i dunno bout all that ive changed my mind alot of times about what i want to be but i think ive finally made up my mind. I wanna be a psychiatrist at a mental institution. Cuz i think crazy people are really interesting honestly. And i know alot about drugs and im interested in them too of course and ill need to go to school for a long time tho which will kinda suck since you have to be a medical doctor in order to become a psychiatrist :(. But it makes real good money too. Just thought id share that lol

  3. I'm an IT Manager/Network Admin. by trade. I enjoy the work, but being on call 24/7 365 gets really old after awhile. I don't enjoy crawling out of bed in the middle of the night to rush to fix a server before the start of business, but it goes along with the job. The pay and benefits are both good.

I'd suggest looking into MCSE or MCSA certification if interested in pursuing a career in this field, as well as a Networking degree. Real world experience is critical in the IT field too. You can know every textbook example of how to fix a problem, but if you can't do it on the fly under pressure that knowledge is completely worthless.

  4. Well I don't have any background with computers, so I'd go to a tech school for a bachelors. Any advice for someone with no experiance? Thanks.

  5. Sociology sounds good...I considered studyin it...but I now prefere social anthropoloigy...quite similar to sociology...

There's a good marked for anthropologists here. All kinds of companies want to hire one to get an overview of their internal structure and to prevent conflicts between the different levels of productions...

I like the sound engineering thought, too...I'm a musician myself and have benn to several recording studios...quite fun. You can take classes to get you the basic knowledge. But you need a good ear and some qualities that cannot be learned...

  6. the toughest part in the IT field is actually getting real world experience, not a whole lot of places want to hire anyone that hasnt worked in the field before.
